Hoffman Holds On to Win Miller Lite 50

by Andrew Schaller
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, August 18, 2012) Madison's Luke Hoffman captured his first career Late Model feature at Wisconsin's Action Track after holding off a late race charge from Alex Papini. Hoffman led every lap of the Miller Lite 50 en route to becoming the tenth different pilot to taste victory this season in Jefferson Speedway's premier division.

Hoffman and Stephen Scheel led the pack to green with Hoffman holding the advantage as they crossed the stripe to complete lap one. Hoffman cleared for sole possession of the top spot on lap two as Scheel fell to second. Stephen's brother, Shaun, moved into third on lap four as Stephen moved up to challenge Hoffman again for the lead. But Hoffman maintained control on the point as the Scheel brothers began to fight for second. The first of four cautions waved on lap 17, closing the leaders up for the restart. As racing resumed, Stephen Scheel took another look under Hoffman while Shaun Scheel watched from third. The second and third cautions appeared consecutively for two separate multi car incidents, the second of which included point leader Casey Johnson and his closest rival in the standings Jason Erickson. Both were forced to restart at the back of the field while Hoffman continued to show the way followed by Scheel and Scheel. Once racing resumed, Shaun fired under Stephen to grab second with Papini in tow for third. While Shaun Scheel tried to close the gap on Hoffman, Papini moved up to challenge Scheel for second. ON lap 32, Papini dove under Scheel as they entered turn three. After drawing even, Papini cleared for the runner up position a lap later and set his sights on Hoffman out front. Papini reeled in Hoffman as the laps ticked away, finally catching him on lap 45 just before the final caution waved. The yellow flag set up a five lap shootout to the finish with Hoffman in the lead and Papini on his rear bumper. But Hoffman stayed strong on the point as Papini was unable to mount a serious threat. At the stripe, it was Hoffman for the win followed by Papini, Shaun Scheel, Dylan Schuler and Jerry Eckhardt.

In Sportsman action, Brady Lilly of Milton found his way to victory lane after a mid-race pass nets him the lead of the 30 lap feature event. Terry Wangsness and Jeff Schultz brought the field to green with Wangsness taking the initial lead as they entered turn one. After an early caution on lap two, Wangsness restarted as the leader with Schultz in second and Lilly already up to third. Once racing resumed, Lilly made his move for second, driving under Schultz on lap six. Lilly completed the pass a lap later with Steven Sauer trying to follow into third. Lilly began to work the low side of the leader, Wangsness, on lap 10. Wangsness held the advantage until Lilly pulled alongside on lap 13. Lilly continued to inch forward until clearing for the top spot on lap 15 as Sauer tried to stay in his tracks. As Lilly pulled out to a healthy lead, Wangsness fought off the advances of Sauer with Kody Hubred joining the battle for second. On lap 21, Hubred got past Sauer for third and quickly charged alongside Wangsness. Hubred cleared for second on lap 22 as he tried to close the gap on the leader. But Lilly remained strong out front as he charged to the checkers for the win. Hubred was second with Mark Deporter, Jim Tate Jr and Sauer rounding out the top five.

Kyle Stark of Waterloo picked up the win in the 20 lap International feature. Dan Birkett and Josh Kubicz battled side by side for control of the lead on lap one. Kubicz held a slight advantage as they crossed the stripe to complete the first circuit with Chris Chenoweth in third. Chenoweth dove under the pair of front row starters as he took over possession of the lead on lap two. As Chenoweth started to break away from the pack, Matt McKinney took a turn under Kubicz as he looked to grab second. On lap seven, Stark joined the fight for second as the three drivers raced three wide. Stark emerged with the position on lap nine as he began to close on Chenoweth out front. Just as Stark caught the early leader and tried to make the pass, the sole caution of the event slowed his efforts on lap 12. Once racing resumed, Stark quickly returned to action as he dove under Chenoweth in turns one and two. Stark cleared for the lead before completing the circuit and immediately began to check out from the field. Point leader, Mike Lambert, made a late race charge to second, but Stark was already well on his way to the checkers with the win. Lambert was second followed by McKinney, John Handeland and Mark English.

An exciting 20 lap Hobby Stock feature ended with Tony Ciano of Janesville in victory lane with the win. Jim Wolf grabbed control of the lead on lap one with Jeff LeFave quickly up to second. LeFave launched his bid for the lead on lap two as he raced under Wolf while Jimmy Robinson watched from third. LeFave completed the pass for the lead on lap three with Robinson in tow for second. Robinson wasted little time behind LeFave, driving to his outside and motoring onto the point on lap four. Bobby Selsing followed into second as he got set to challenge the new leader. Selsing looked to the low side of Robinson on lap eight with James Helmer and Ciano battling for third right behind. On lap 13, contact between Helmer and Selsing forced Selsing to check up as Robinson regained control of the lead. The incident allowed Ciano to fire into second with only five laps remaining. Ciano pulled up behind Robinson as he took a turn looking to the low side with two laps to go. Ciano drew even as the duo flew past the white flag. Ciano claimed the advantage through turns one and two and cleared for the lead as they raced down the back chute. Ciano powered out of turn four to see the checkers first for the win. Robinson settled for second followed by Helmer, Selsing and Dustin Ward.

Tim Ellis of South Beloit, IL, made a late race pass to get the win in the 15 lap Road Warrior main event. Rodger Stephenson and Chad Olds battled side by side to open the action with Olds taking control of the lead on lap two. Stephenson dropped to second with Bill Sweeney challenging Jared Larson for third. Sweeney moved into third on lap four and quickly took a look under Stephenson for second. Sweeney cleared for second on lap eight with Ellis in tow for the third spot. Sweeney continued to move forward, driving under Olds on lap nine and leading the race a lap later. Ellis followed into second as he pulled up behind the new leader on lap 11. Ellis took to the outside groove on lap 13, drawing even with Sweeney entering turn one. They raced wheel to wheel under the white flag to begin the final lap. Ellis gained a slight advantage down the back stretch and through turns three and four as he nipped Sweeney at the stripe to get the win. Rounding out the top five were Sweeney, Rob Lange, Olds and Bill Reynolds.

Jordan Lamb of Fort Atkinson led every lap of the 20 lap Bandit feature to secure the win. Starting from the pole, Lamb grabbed control of the lead on lap one with Erik Bennett up to second and Michael Heimann in third. Lamb continued to stretch his lead lap after lap as the top three remained the same. Kyle Stark made a late race charge up to second, but it was too late to cut into the large lead that Lamb had built. At the checkers, it was Lamb with the convincing victory followed by Stark, Bennett, Phil Wuesthoff and Josh Marx.

Next Saturday, August 25, is a full program of racing in all six divisions with time trials beginning at 5pm and racing at 7pm.
