JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, September 10, 2011) The regular racing season came to a close at Wisconsin’s Action Track as champions were crowned on Havill Spoerl Season Championship night. While Fort Atkinson’s Jason Erickson was putting the finishing touches on his fourth Late Model title, it was Shaun Scheel of Lake Mills capturing his first career Late Model feature win.
Jerry Eckhardt and Scott Lindsay led the field to the green flag with Lindsay taking control on lap one. Eckhardt fell in line behind Lindsay with Scheel running in third. Scheel made his move on lap 11, moving to the low side of Eckhardt for second. Scheel continued to slide forward as he drew even with Lindsay on lap 13. Scheel inched forward, claimed sole possession of the point on lap 16 while Ty James and Casey Johnson joined the leaders in fourth and fifth respectively. Scheel began to stretch his advantage while Eckhardt and Lindsay waged war for the second position. Eckhardt gained the spot on lap 21 with James following in his tracks for third. The battle for second began to heat up on lap 44, this time between Eckhardt and James. With ten laps remaining, James cleared for second with Johnson in tow for third. The leaders began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 56, but Scheel stayed strong as he saw the checkers first for the win. James finished second with Johnson, Eckhardt and Jason Erickson rounding out the top five. Erickson’s fifth place finish helped him secure his third track championship in the last four seasons and fourth overall in Jefferson Speedway’s premier division.
Fort Atkinson’s Mark Deporter laid claim to his second feature win in a row by winning the 35 lap Sportsman main event. Adam Bleskan led early from the pole with Will Rece right behind in second. Bleskan began to slip away after an early caution while Rece tried to hold off Ken Hoff for second. Rece and Hoff made contact exiting turn four on lap seven causing a pile up and forcing Rece to retire for the evening. Bleskan restarted as the leader, this time with Stephen Scheel in his mirror. On the restart, Deporter charged up alongside Scheel for second while Jay Kalbus made his way up to fourth. Kalbus watched as Deporter tried to clear Scheel for second. Deporter got a good run on lap 24, clearing for second and pulling alongside Bleskan at the front. After a brief battle, Deporter cleared for the top spot on lap 26 with Kalbus trying to copy his move. Kalbus made the pass for second on lap 30, but Deporter was well on his way to picking up the victory. Kalbus finished second followed by Bleskan, Brady Lilly and Terry Wangsness. Watertown’s Jay Kalbus was crowned 2011 Sportsman track champion.
Waterloo’s Kyle Stark capped off his season of domination in the International class by winning the 25 lap feature and sealing his title. Jason Kubicz led on lap one with Dale Smith up to second. Smith moved to the low side of Kubicz on lap three, clearing two laps later with Matt McKinney in tow for second. McKinney continued to move forward, drawing even with Smith on lap nine. McKinney claimed the point on lap 12 with Devon Dixon in his tracks. Stark joined the fight for second as he dropped to the bottom of the racing surface and made it a three wide affair for second. Stark took the spot on lap 13 as he set his sights on McKinney. Stark dove under McKinney on lap 14, claiming the lead a lap later as he started to check out from the field. Stark cruised to the checkers to get the win with McKinney coming home in second. Rounding out the top five were Dixon, Mike Lambert and Mark English.
Steven Sauer of Waterloo claimed the lead just before the midway point of the Hobby Stock 25 lap feature and drove away to get the victory. Jamie Dunn led early with Mike Manley trying to pull even on the outside. Sean Watters joined the battle for the lead as he stuck his nose in the middle to make it three wide. Watters and Manley emerged side by side for the top spot on lap six with Watters taking control a lap later. Meanwhile, Sauer charged his way into the top five and found himself in third by lap seven. On lap eight, Sauer claimed second as he began to pressure Watters at the front. Sauer looked to the low side of Watters, drawing even on lap ten and clearing down the backstretch. Dustin Ward made a late race charge up to second, but Sauer was already well on his way to the stripe to pick up the win. Ward finished second followed by Zack Schmidt, Watters and Brent Gergen. Jim Tate Jr of Deforest finished sixth as he wrapped up the Hobby Stock track championship.
Scott Pauls of Deerfield powered to the front and ran away to win the 20 lap Road Warrior feature and also claim the 2011 track championship. Bill Sweeney and Matt McKinney battle door to door on the first lap with Sweeney emerging as the early leader. After an early caution on lap two, Pauls dove under McKinney trying to steal second. Pauls claimed the spot on lap three as he began to close up on Sweeney. On lap five, Pauls got a good run under Sweeney, pulling alongside. After a two lap battle, Pauls cleared for the lead and immediately began to pull away. Sweeney remained in second as he tried to run Pauls back down, but Pauls was too strong as he cruised to the checkers for the win. Sweeney settled for second with Bill Reynolds, Rob Lange and Rodger Stephenson completing the top five.
Derek Dixon of Janesville used a late race pass to capture the 25 lap Bandit feature event. Dylan Buckingham led lap one with Brandon Johnson up to second. On lap six, Johnson got a run to the inside of Buckingham exiting turn four. The duo made heavy contact down the front stretch as they slid up the track in turn one bringing out the caution. Erik Bennett inherited the top spot with Dave Schmidt riding in second. As racing resumed, Schmidt drove to the outside of Bennett, stealing the lead for himself on lap seven. Schmidt opened up a big lead while the battle for second raged behind him. Dixon blew past Mike Heimann and Nick Schmidt for second on lap 18. Dixon began to close the gap on Dave Schmidt as the laps wound down. Dixon caught the leader with four circuits remaining. Dixon drove to the outside of Schmidt, drawing even on lap 21 and clearing for the lead a lap later. Dixon charged to the checkers to get the win with Dave Schmidt, Heather Stark, Heimann and Phil Wuesthoff rounding out the top five. Heather Stark’s third place finish netted her the 2011 Bandit track championship.
