Zielski Muscles His Way to B&M Electric 65 Win

By Andrew Schaller
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, July 9, 2011) Ryan Zielski of Oconomowoc used a late race pass to capture the lead and charge to the checkers on Saturday night at Jefferson Speedway. Zielski’s victory in the B&M Electric 65 lap Late Model feature marked his first of the 2011 campaign at Wisconsin’s Action Track.

The Goodyear Summer Rumble Late Model main event kicked off with Shaun Scheel and Brandon Pendleton leading the way to the drop of the green flag. Scheel grabbed control on lap one with Pendleton falling in line behind him. On lap two, the outside line began to check up as they entered turn three resulting in John Ovadal spinning and collecting several competitors towards the back of the pack. After another brief caution on lap six, Bruce Lee moved around Pendleton to claim the second spot with Scheel still leading the field. Zielski moved up to challenge Pendleton for third, claiming the position a lap later and setting his sights on Lee in second. While Zielski and Lee battled for the runner up position, Scheel opened up a healthy advantage over the duo. Zielski eventually cleared for second on lap 20 with Steve Dobbratz in his tracks for third. Another caution for debris slowed the field and erased Scheel’s big lead on lap 22. As racing resumed, Zielski launched a bid for the lead as he moved to the low side of Scheel entering turn one. After battling for several laps, door to door, Scheel regained the top spot while Zielski fell back into a fight for second with Dobbratz. Scheel began to slip away from the field again while Zielski and Dobbratz waged war for second. As the laps began to wind down, Zielski claimed sole possession of second once again and moved up to challenge Scheel for the lead. With four laps remaining, Zielski and Scheel touched entering turn one forcing Scheel to drift through the corner. Zielski pounced on the opening as he drew even with the leader. A lap later, Zielski motored into the lead with Dobbratz following past Scheel for second. Zielski saw the checkers first to claim the win with Dobbratz finishing second. Jason Erickson nipped Scheel at the line for third with Luke Westenberg rounding out the top five.

In Sportsman action, it was Tory Bagley of Stoughton laying claim to the 40 lap feature event. Kody Hubred claimed the early lead from the pole while Scott Riedner, Will Rece and Bagley made it a three wide fight for second. Rece and Bagley emerged side by side as they continued to battle behind Hubred. Bagley gained control of second on lap two as he pulled up to the rear bumper of Hubred. Bagley charged under Hubred on lap five. The pair of drivers battled wheel to wheel for the point. Bagley claimed the top spot on lap eight with Mark Deporter moving up to challenge Hubred next. After a caution on lap 13, Deporter moved under Hubred and stole the second spot away with Jay Kalbus in tow for third. The leaders raced nose to tail over the remainder of the event with Bagley never seeing a serious challenge to his lead. Bagley crossed under the checkers first to get the win with Deporter, Kalbus, Kurt Kleven and Hubred completing the top five.

Kyle Stark of Waterloo continued his dominating ways in the International class as he celebrated another 20 lap feature victory. Peter Shelley and James Bell led the field to green with Bell taking the initial lead on lap one. Matt McKinney followed Bell into second on lap two. After an early caution, McKinney looked to the low side of Bell entering turn one. Bell locked up his brakes allowing McKinney to fire past into the lead. McKinney began to slip away from the pack while Ken Au was making his way up to second. Gary and Kyle Stark made their way into the top five by lap seven as they continued to move towards the front. The Starks got past Bell for third and fourth respectively as Kyle began to challenge Gary for position. Kyle got around his brother on lap 11 and quickly moved to the inside of Au for second. Kyle Stark claimed the second spot on lap 13 as he set his sights on McKinney at the front. Stark drew even with McKinney on lap 14, clearing for the lead a lap later and immediately pulling away from the pack. Stark cruised to the feature win followed by McKinney, Gary Stark, Au and Kyle Smith.

Tony Ciano of Janesville captured the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature after holding off a hard charging Dustin Ward in the closing laps of the race. Rodger Stephenson led early on with Brent Gergen quickly moving up to challenge. Gergen drove past Stephenson on lap three, bringing Ciano along for second. Chester Williams and Ward followed Ciano past Stephenson as well while Ciano closed on Gergen out front. Ciano finally caught Gergen on lap 18 as he looked to the low groove to make a pass. Ciano pulled even with Gergen on lap 19 while Ward watched from third. Ciano cleared with five circuits remaining while Ward followed in his tracks. Ward cleared for second on lap 21 and pulled up behind the new leader. Despite heavy pressure from Ward, Ciano remained strong at the point to see the checkers first for the win. Ward came home second followed by Gergen, Jim Tate Jr and Steven Sauer.

Scott Pauls of Deerfield got the front of the 15 lap Road Warrior feature and hung on to get the win. Rodger Stephenson claimed the lead on lap one with Pauls right behind in second. Pauls drove under Stephenson on lap two as the pair of drivers raced side by side. Pauls claimed the lead just before the sole caution of the race flew on lap five. Pauls restarted as the leader while Bill Sweeney and Rob Lange were slicing through the pack. Sweeney got past Stephenson for second on lap nine with Lange in tow for third. Pauls stretched his advantage while Sweeney and Lange battled for second over the closing laps. Pauls drove off to get the win with Lange beating Sweeney to the line for second. Completing the top five were Bill Reynolds and Stephenson.

Kyle Riedner of Waunakee rounded out the evening’s events by claiming the 20 lap Bandit feature. Tadd Douglas was the early leader with Mitch Brockway in his mirror for second. On lap five, Brockway muscled to the inside of Douglas entering turn three. Brockway claimed the point with Riedner following into second. Brockway continued to lead the field as the laps ticked away. With only three laps to go, Brockway began to drop fluid on to the racing surface forcing the yellow flag to wave and end his bid for the win. Riedner inherited the lead and held off Phil Wuesthoff to get the victory. Rounding out the top five were Nick Schmidt, Seth Reamer and Keith Erickson.
