Johnson A Three Time Winner at Jefferson Speedway

By Andrew Schaller

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, August 15, 2009) Casey Johnson of Stoughton became the only three time feature winner at Jefferson Speedway this past Saturday night by laying claim to the B&M Electric 50 lap Late Model main event. Johnson charged to the front from the outside of row five to get the win.

Starting alongside Allen Petrie, Ryan Zielski took the early lead on the opening lap with Chris Quam following into second. Johnson quickly made his way forward and into the top five on lap ten as the first of three cautions waved. After the restart, Quam took a peek to the inside of Zielski for the top spot. But his efforts were slowed for caution once again on lap 14. As the green returned, Johnson dove to the inside of Dylan Schuyler to take away the third position and pull alongside Quam for the runner up spot. But on lap 17, Quam’s accelerator stuck entering turn three, sending him hard into the outside wall and ending his evening. Johnson used the restart to rifle under Zielski as he looked to lead. Johnson grabbed the point a lap later and began to stretch his advantage while Schuyler maneuvered to second. Johnson continued to dominate while the battle for second raged behind him. Schuyler battled with Bob Kahler side by side while Jason Erickson and Kyle Jarlsberg watched from behind. Schuyler eventually reclaimed the position for himself, but Johnson had checked out from the field on his way to the checkers. At the stripe, it was Johnson for the win followed by Schuyler, Erickson, Kahler and Jarlsberg.

In Sportsman action, it was Scott Riedner of Waunakee taking top honors in the 30 lap feature event. Mike Acheson and Jim Assmann paced the field to green with Acheson commanding the early lead. Brady Lilly moved up to challenge for the top spot, taking the position for himself on lap three. Meanwhile, Jason Dunn was making his way forward bringing Riedner and Tory Bagley along with him. Dunn found himself in second on lap five with Riedner knocking on his door in third. Riedner fired under Dunn and stole the spot away on lap twelve, setting his sights on Lilly. Bagley followed into third just as Riedner pulled up to Lilly’s rear bumper. Bagley experienced mechanical difficulties on lap 16 and was forced to retire. Riedner began to challenge Lilly for the lead on lap 17, pulling to the inside as they entered turn one. Riedner chipped away at Lilly’s lead lap after lap until finally clearing for the top spot on lap 23. Riedner cruised to the stripe for the win with Lilly, Chris Ehrhart, Dunn and Kody Hubred rounding out the top five.

Jefferson’s Chris Gottschalk captured the 20 lap International feature event. Mike Lambert and Ken Hoff Jr made up row one at the drop of the green. The pair battled side by side for the opening five laps until Hoff cleared for the lead down the backstretch. Gottschalk, who started right behind Hoff, dove to the inside as they entered turn three. Gottschalk took control of the point a lap later with Mark Dewey moving up to second. Gottschalk opened up a healthy advantage over the field until caution waved on lap 18 when Dewey lost control in turns one and two and collected Chad Olds. Gottschalk was able to hold on to the lead through the green/white/checkered finish to claim the win followed by Joe Cross, Matt McKinney, Rob Lange and Kyle Smith.

Kyle Stark of Waterloo claimed the early lead and rode it to the win in the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Starting from the inside of row three, Stark quickly moved forward and entered into a three way battle for the lead with Mike Meyers and Kyle Chwala. Stark grabbed control on lap three just before the caution waved a couple laps later. Jimmy Robinson and Dustin Ward were slicing their way through the field and into the top five as the green waved once again over the field. Robinson made his way to second on lap 12 with Ward in tow for third. Ward got a good run on Robinson five laps later and stole the runner up spot for himself on lap 18. Ward moved up to challenge Stark for the lead, but Stark remained strong and saw the checkers first for the win. Ward was second with Steve Sauer, Jimmy Robinson and Johnny Robinson rounding out the top five.

Point leader Kyle Watters of Stoughton increased his advantage by claiming the 20 lap Bandit feature event. Keaton Hubred took the initial lead on lap one from the front row with Will Rece falling in behind for second. Rece remained in Hubred’s tire tracks while Watters was flying to the front of the field. Watters used the high groove to continue moving forward. Watters quickly motored up to second on lap 13 and pulled up alongside Hubred for the lead. Watters owned sole possession of the top spot on lap 16 as he drove off for the win. Completing the top five were Hubred, Dave Schmidt, Travis Schneeberg and Rece.

Next Saturday, August 23, is a full program in all divisions highlighted by the King Collision 50 lap Late Model feature. Also, the School Bus Jump of Death will take place during intermission. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm sharp. Jefferson Speedway is located halfway between Jefferson and Cambridge on Hwy 18. Please visit www.jeffersonspeedway.com for more information.
