Hubred Claims First Feature
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, September 3, 2016) After coming close on many occasions this season, Kody Hubred of Cambridge finally put his Late Model in victory lane at Jefferson Speedway on Saturday night. His win in the Triana’s Trophy Case 50 lap feature marks Hubred’s first career Late Model victory at Wisconsin’s Action Track.
Kyle Chwala and Don Gaserude paced the field to green as they battled wheel to wheel for control in the opening laps. Chwala gained the advantage and cleared for the top spot on lap four with Hubred quickly up to second a lap later. Shaun Scheel moved into third as Hubred began to apply pressure to Chwala for the lead. On lap seven, Hubred drew even with Chwala as they raced through turns three and four. By lap eight, Hubred was out front and pulling away while Chwala tried to hold off Scheel for second. Hubred’s lead continued to grow as Chwala and Scheel raced side by side for position. Chwala moved back into second alone on lap 12, but Scheel stayed close. On lap 16, Scheel returned to the inside of Chwala, this time making the pass for second on lap 18. The sole caution of the race appeared on lap 21 for an accident in turn two involving Tony Koepke. As racing resumed, Hubred once again began to separate himself from the rest of the pack while Scheel hung on to second in front of Chwala. Hubred maintained a comfortable advantage over the rest of the field on his way to the checkers for the win. Scheel was second with Chwala, John Ovadal Jr and Michael Grueneberg rounding out the top five.
Janesville’s Tony Ciano scored another feature win after claiming the 30 lap Sportsman main event. Jim Taylor grabbed the initial lead on lap one with Ciano already up to second. Jay Kalbus moved into third as Ciano began peeking to the inside of Taylor for first. Ciano finally gained enough momentum to draw even with Taylor on lap ten. The duo battled door to door until lap 17 when Ciano moved into control of the top spot. Kalbus followed into second a couple laps later with Robert Hansberry Jr trying to follow into third. A caution with three laps remaining set up a shootout to the finish, but Ciano had the field covered on his way to the stripe for the win. Kalbus was second followed by Hansberry, Selsing and Chris Chenoweth.
Janesville’s James Bell picked up his second straight feature win in the International division by claiming his 20 lap feature race. Merek Pankow and Joe Cross opened up the action from row one. Cross held the advantage after one lap, clearing for the lead on lap two. Jamie Kohn shot up to second and dove under Cross, stealing the lead for himself on lap three. Meanwhile, Bell was slicing his way through the top five, racing up to second by lap eight. Bell began reeling in Kohn at the front. By lap 13, Bell was on Kohn’s rear bumper. Bell took to the high side of the leader, pulling alongside on lap 14. Two laps later, Bell was out front alone as he cruised to the checkers from there for the win. Kohn finished second followed by Mike Lambert, Seth Reamer and Josh Marx.
Phil Wuesthoff of Beaver Dam claimed the caution free 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Jim Robinson led lap one with Wuesthoff quickly up to second. Wuesthoff dove under Robinson as they raced through turns three and four on lap two. After a brief side by side battle, Wuesthoff took over the point on lap three. Behind them Dustin Ward and Cody Buchs launched a battle for third that would last the majority of the race. But Wuesthoff ran to the checkers unchallenged to score the win with Robinson coming home second. Ward won the battle for third with Buchs and AJ Lloyd rounded out the top five.
In Road Warrior action, it was Craig Henning of Helenville picking up the win in the 15 lap affair. Rickie Nelson led lap one from the pole with Henning up to second. Henning motored past Nelson on lap two just before the caution waved on lap three, slowing the action. Henning and Mark Dewey led the field back to green with Henning returning to the lead. Bryan Gottschalk moved past Dewey for second and began to challenge Henning for the top spot. Gottschalk continued to work the low side of the leader as he tried to draw even. But Henning fended off his challenge each time to remain in control. At the checkers, it was Henning for the win followed by Gottschalk, Kenny Storkson, Bill Sweeney and Dewey.
Jared Pinnow of Jefferson picked up his first career feature win by capturing the 15 lap Bandit feature event. Pinnow and CJ Hemiller led the field to green with Pinnow lead lap one. Point leader, Chad Olds, used the high groove to fire up into the top three by lap four. Olds joined the battle at the front with Pinnow and Hemiller until the first of two cautions slowed the pace on lap five. While under caution, Olds pulled into the pit area, ending his chances for the win. Pinnow and Hemiller once again led the field back to green with Pinnow hold the advantage. Bill Kohn joined the two leaders with Pinnow still holding a slight advantage. On lap 12, Hemiller entered turn three too high, making hard contact with the outside retainer to force the second caution. Hemiller was able to continue but was forced to restart from the rear. Pinnow and Kohn paced the field on the restart as they battled side by side for control. The duo raced door to door under the white flag to begin the final lap. Pinnow held the advantage off turn four and past the stripe to score the win. Kohn settled for second followed by Jeremy Bredeson, Tyler Deporter and Josh Lenz.
