Chesmore Returns to Victory Lane at Jefferson Speedway
By Larry Starr
August 27, 2005; Jefferson WI — Dan Chesmore of Janesville claimed top honors in the “Good Karma Cup” 50 lap Late Model feature. Starting outside row 4 Chesmore headed toward the front, as Greg Bowers jumped to the early lead. Chesmore was up to the 5th spot when the first caution came, for a spin in turn 2, on lap 11. The race halted, again, on lap 18, for another spin in turn 2.
Chesmore was still running 5th, when calamity struck, in turn 4, when a spin sent a car into the wall collecting 7 cars. On the restart Chesmore motored past Bret Schmidt, for 4th, closing with Mike Taylor. Taylor surrendered the 3rd spot on lap 25, as Chesmore moved in on Jerry Eckhardt. Motoring past Eckhardt on lap 28, Chesmore set his sites on Bowers. Closing with Bowers, on lap 25, Chesmore launched his bid for the lead. Moving to the inside, Chesmore pulled even on lap 37, claiming the lead on lap 38. At the stripe it was Chesmore for the win, followed by Bowers, Eckhardt, Tim Noble and Jason Schuler.
Noble won the “Winner’s Circle Challenge,” with Chesmore finishing 2nd.
In International action Chris Nelson of Cottage Grove completed a “clean sweep” with his victory in the 15 lap main event. Starting inside row 4, Nelson headed for the point, as Keryn Hopwood claimed the early lead. Hopwood surrendered the point, to Brent Nottestad, on lap 5, with Nelson up to the 3rd spot. Nelson claimed 2nd by lap 7, and took the point on lap 8. At the stripe it was Nelson for the win followed by Brandon Kozak, Scotty Hoeft, Nottestad and Hopwood.
Nelson won the “Winner’s Circle Challenge,” as well as turning in fast time and winning the Fast Dash.
In Sportsman action Curt Thompson of Fort Atkinson notched a win in the 25 lap feature. Starting 6th, Thompson began his trek to the checkers, as Cliff Rucks drove to the early lead. Rucks guided the way for 7 laps, as Thompson moved to the front. Closing with Rucks Thompson claimed the point on lap 8, only to see Rucks take it back on lap 9. The battle raged for 2 more laps before Thompson was able to regain the lead. Once at the point, Thompson showed the way to the checkers. At the finish it was Thompson followed by Dave Oswald, Trent Erdman, Mark DePorter and Rucks.
Jason Thoma won the “Winner’s Circle Challenge,” holding off Trent Erdman at the finish.
In Hobby Stock action Lincoln Keeser managed a last lap pass, to claim victory in the 20 lap feature. Starting inside row 3, Keeser watched Steve Sauer grab the early lead. Driving to the 2nd spot, by lap 4, Keeser closed with Sauer on lap 7. The pair battled side-by-side, all the way to the finish, with Sauer always holding a slight advantage. As the white flag flew, Keeser went for the gold driving even out of the 2nd turn the flew into turn 3. Keeser edged ahead around turns 3 and 4 to lead only one lap of the race, the final lap. At the stripe it was Keeser for the win over Sauer. Rounding out the top 5 were Jesse Ayers, Scott Carson and Bryon Grassl.
Eaan Carson won the “Winner’s Circle Challenge,” with Larry Moen finishing 2nd.
In Bandit action Casey Johnson was first at the line, in the 20 lap main event. Starting outside row 1, Johnson ran 2nd to Tim Bristol at the start. A multi-car pileup, in turn 3, halted the racing action, on the first lap, with a second caution, for a car stalled on the front stretch on lap 2. Johnson claimed the point, from Bristol, on lap 3, showing the way from there to the checkers. At the stripe it was Johnson for the win followed by Ryan Hart, Shaun Scheel, Tom Schuette and Brandon Riedner.
Bill Sweeney won the “Winner’s Circle Challenge,” with Scheel finishing 2nd.
