Chesmore & Wendt split 50’s at Jefferson!

August 19, 2000; Jefferson, WI. -Before a near capacity crowd Jefferson Speedway presented nearly two complete nights of racing, in one, including two, 50 lap, Late Model features.

In the Watertown Bowl 50, Dan Chesmore of Janesville claimed top honors. Starting from the outside of row 4, Chesmore started his drive to the front as Ken Olson of Ft. Atkinson pulled out to the early lead. Olson guided the way for 36 laps as Chesmore battled his way toward the point. Chesmore motored past Scott Null of Lake Mills, on lap 9, for the 4th spot. Closing with Luke Westenberg of Palmyra. Westenberg surrendered the 3rd spot on lap 11 as Chesmore closed with Scott Bleecker of Jefferson.

Bleecker held off Chesmore for 20 laps, before Chesmore managed to claim the 2nd spot, on lap 32. Once in the 2nd spot Chesmore set his sights on Olson and the top spot. On lap 34 Chesmore launched his bid for the lead, moving under Olson. Olson held off the charge until lap 36 before surrendering the point. The race slowed for its only caution on lap 38, for a spin in the 2nd turn. On the restart Chesmore showed the way to the checkered flag followed by Olson, Bleecker, Ron Bishofberger of Ft. Atkinson and Andy Wendt of Watertown.

Qualifying for the Watertown Bowl 50 was completed on Saturday, August 12, as well as the first 2, of 4, heat races.

Claiming victories, in the last two heat races were Gene Olson Jr. of Jefferson and Duane Deppe of Waterloo.

Moving to the Last Chance race, from the 12 lap Consi, were Justin Switlick of Wausau and Don Matrisch of Whitewater.

Joining the Watertown Bowl 50, via the 20 lap Last Chance race were Jasper Gronert of Jefferson Brent Knight of Watertown, Jerry Parker of Palmyra and Gene Olson Jr. of Jefferson.

In Watertown Bowl, International division action, Aaron Rude of Cambridge notched the win, in the 20 lap main event. Starting from the outside of row 5, Rude started his trek to the checkered flag, as Scott Uttech of Beaver Dam claimed the early lead. Caution came on lap 2 when a pair of cars tangled. On the restart Rude was running 4th with Uttech still at the point.

Rude motored past Darnell Mepham of Ft. Atkinson, for 2nd, before the final caution of the race cam, on lap 12. On the restart Rude pulled under Uttech looking for the lead, with Brent Nottestad of Cambridge close behind for 2nd. Rude guided the field to the checkered flag, holding off Nottestad’s charge. At the stripe it was Rude for the win, followed by Nottestad, Uttech, Mepham and Mike Drays of Milton.

All qualifying for the International division, Watertown Bowl, event was conducted Saturday, August 12.

In Sportsman division action, for Watertown Bowl night, Rick Coppernoll of Marshall claimed top honors in the 25 lap main event. Starting from the outside of row 5, Coppernoll headed for the point as Dale Padfield of Jefferson grabbed the early lead. Coppernoll was up to 5th before the first caution of the race, on lap 2, for a multi-car tangle in turn 4.

Padfield led the restart, as Coppernoll moved under Dylan Schuyler of Dousman for the 3rd spot. By lap 8, Coppernoll had moved past Josh Weir of Cottage Grove for 2nd and was closing with Padfield. Padfield held off Coppernoll until lap 18, before surrendering the point. A car fire brought the final caution of the race, on lap 24, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. At the stripe it was Coppernoll for the win, followed by Padfield, Dave Oswald of Cottage Grove, Josh Courtney of Janesville and Kyle Munro of Jefferson.

All qualifying and heat races for the Watertown Bowl Sportsman competition were completed August 12.

Moving to the Last Chance race, from the 10 lap Consi. were Brian Paszek of Middleton and Faye Riedner of Waunakee.

Completing the feature lineup, from the 15 lap Last Chance race, were Mike Landers of Johnson Creek, Joe Wendorf of Jefferson, Brian Paszek of Middleton and Tom Collins of Lake Mills.

In Hobby Stock action, for Watertown Bowl night, Ernie Witte of Johnson Creek claimed top honors in the 20 lap feature. Starting from the inside of row 2, Witte charged to the early lead and never looked back, guiding the way flag to flag. Witte was challenged, in the early going, by Denis Schmidt of Farmington and Nick Golich of Hebron. Holding off the challengers, Witte showed the way to the checkered flag. At the stripe it was Witte for the win, followed by Denis Schmidt of Farmington, Nick Golich of Hebron, Jim Pfeifer of Ft. Atkinson and Chris Matz of Watertown.

All qualifying and heat races for the Hobby Stock portion of the Watertown Bowl races for the Hobby Stocks were completed August 12.

Joining the feature lineup from the 8 lap Last Chance race were Jason Thom of Ft. Atkinson, Randy Strasburg of Ft. Atkinson, John Deussler of Marshall and Brett Carson of Johnson Creek.

Completing the Watertown Bowl portion of the racing program was the Great American Bartender’s Race, where Larry Haumschild, of Moe’s Place in Lake Mills came from the rear to score his second annual victory.

Just when you think it’s all over, it’s only begun! With the Watertown Bowl sponsored races in the books, the racing program moved directly into the “Generac Portable Power Products 50” with a 50 lap Late Model feature and a full program in all racing divisions, capped with the Demo Derby.

In the Generac Power Products 50 lap main event Nick Wendt of Watertown turned in a stellar performance, holding off current point leader Dan Chesmore of Janesville to claim top honors. Starting from the outside of row 3, Wendt started his trek to the front as Duane Deppe of Waterloo pulled out tot he early lead. Wendt spent the first 17 laps battling with Ken Olson of Ft. Atkinson for the 3rd spot.

Making his way past Olson, Wendt moved up behind Gene Olson Jr. of Jefferson joining the battle for 2nd, as Chesmore contested with Ron Bishofberger of Ft. Atkinson for the 6th spot. Caution came, on lap 27, when a pair of cars tangled in turn 4. On the restart Deppe still held the point with Wendt running 3rd and Chesmore up to 5th. Wendt moved under Olson at the green flag, claiming the 2nd spot on lap 28.

By lap 30 Wendt motored under Deppe for the lead, with Chesmore close behind, claiming the 2nd spot. Chesmore opened his bag of tricks, working hard for the top spot, but Wendt had a few tricks left in his bag also. Chesmore kept the pressure on, all the way to the finish but was never able to find his way around. As they flew past the checkered flag it was Wendt for the victory followed by Chesmore, Jim Jarlsberg of Cambridge, Andy Wendt of Watertown and Bishofberger.

Bill Leindecker of Janesville turned in the fast qualifying time with a 14.767 second orbit of the quarter mile.

Jarlsberg claimed top honors in the “Generac Portable Power Products” Dash for Cash.

Claiming victories, in 10 lap heat races, were Bill Drefahl of Evansville, Russ Goodwin of Beloit, Chad Stevens of Beloit and Denny Stair of Sullivan.

Moving to the Last Chance race, from the 10 lap Consolation race, were Randy Cusick of Ft. Atkinson, Stevens, Jim Gleesing of Whitewater and Scott Bleecker of Jefferson.

In International Division action Ed Wolf III of Watertown claimed top honors in the 20 lap main event. Starting from the outside of row 4, Wolf headed toward the front as Scott Uttech of Beaver Dam pulled out to the early lead. Wolf moved through traffic, claiming 2nd, from Derek Bettenhausen of Cambridge, on lap 7, with the current point leader Brent Nottestad of Cambridge close behind for 3rd.

Wolf motored under Uttech, on lap 11, making his bid for the lead. The battle lasted 2 laps, with Wolf pulling ahead on lap 13. Nottestad claimed 2nd on lap 14, closing with Wolf, but was unable to find an opening. At the stripe it was Wolf for the win, followed by Nottestad, Chris Quam of Stoughton, Uttech and Mike Drays of Milton.

Nottestad set the high mark in qualifying with a 15.886 second circuit of the quarter mile.

Claiming victory, in 10 lap heat races, were Mike Dietzen of Milwaukee and Drays.

In Sportsman Division action Josh Courtney of Janesville claimed top honors in the 25 lap feature. Starting from the inside of row 3, Courtney started the moved to the point as Dale Padfield of Jefferson pulled out to the early lead. Courtney moved under Dylan Schuyler of Dousman, for 2nd, on lap 9, moving up behind Padfield. Padfield fought hard, holding off Courtney in a 3 lap battle before surrendering the point on lap 13. As Courtney pulled ahead, the current point leader Dave Oswald of Cottage Grove was battling for the 4th spot, with Mark Deporter of Ft. Atkinson. At the stripe it was Courtney for the win, followed by Padfield, Oswald, Schuyler and Brian Paszek of Middleton.

Oswald set the fast qualifying pace, with a 15.765 second tour of the quarter mile.

Claiming victories, in 10 lap heat races, were Mike Acheson of Watertown, Joe Wendorf of Jefferson, Bobby Stough of Stoughton and Paszek.

Moving to the Last Chance race, from the 10 lap Consolation race were Luke Padfield of Jefferson and Bob Jacobs of Deforest.

Joining the feature lineup, from the 15 lap Last Chance race, were Dan Schmidt of Farmington, Tom Collins of Lake Mills, Rich Titus of Jefferson and Wendorf.

For the benefit of those present we are happy to report that Tony Koepke of Ft. Atkinson, who crashed hard during Sportsman competition, suffered no broken bones. Koepke is at home, sore and bruised, but otherwise OK. His race car did not fare as well!

In Hobby Stock action John Remsik of Sun Prairie claimed his first feature win, in the 20 lap Main event. Starting from the outside of row 1, Remsik claimed the early lead and never looked back, guiding the field to the checkers. Caution came on lap 9 for a spin on the back stretch, closing the field behind Remsik. Remsik handled the restart, gaining ground as Jim Pfeifer of Ft. Atkinson battled his way up from 5th. Pfeifer claimed 2nd, on lap 16, working to reel in Remsik. It was too little, and too late, as Remsik charged the checkered flag, with Pfeifer 2nd. Rounding out the top 5 were Terry Wangsness of Whitewater, Kevin Quale of Ft. Atkinson and Nick Golich of Hebron.

Tim Noble of Janesville turned in fast time for the night, with a 17.022 second lap on the quarter mile.

Claiming victory, in 8 lap heat races, were Bobby Stough of Stoughton, Ernie Witte of Johnson Creek and Quale.

Moving to the feature lineup, from the 12 lap Last Chance race, were Witte, Roger Stephenson of Cambridge, Tom Egli of Sun Prairie and Jeremy Hartwig of Cottage Grove.

The Demo Derby completed the nights action on the race track, with Roy Pfeifer Jr. of Ft. Atkinson piloting the last car running.

Next Week Jefferson Speedway hosts the UAW Local 95 – 50’, the WFAW/Voss Sentry Foods Winners Circle Challenge and the Rollover Contest finale.

Gates open at 4:00, qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 7:30 sharp.

Coming Sunday, September 3 is the second “Tournament of Destruction,” with Rollover Contest, Trailer Race, Bubble Gauntlet, Auto Football and many more spectacular events to thrill children, of all ages.

Gates will open at 4:00pm with the first event at 7:30pm.

Jefferson Speedway is on highway 18 between Cambridge and Jefferson Wisconsin.
