Dale Nottestad and Shaun Scheel Win on Double Feature Night

CAMBRIDGE, WI (Saturday, July 7, 2018)              Following poor weather that forced a premature end to the racing program one week prior, it was double feature night at Jefferson Speedway on Saturday night. All seven divisions on hand were able to compete in two feature events, making for an action packed evening of racing. The two standouts in the premier division at Wisconsin’s Action Track on this particular evening were defending track champion, Dale Nottestad of Cambridge, and Lake Mills pilot, Shaun Scheel. Both drivers scored Late Model feature wins. The wins marked the second for each pilot on the 2018 season.

Don Gaserude and Seth Reamer brought the field to green in the first Late Model main event of the night, the Triana’s Trophy Case 50. After a brief battle to open the action, Gaserude took the lead with Dylan Schuyler up to battle Reamer for second. Schuyler took over the second position on lap seven, bringing Riley Stenjem along for third. Schuyler and Stenjem ran down Gaserude at the front, catching him on lap 12 and splitting the leader as they raced three wide into turn three. Stenjem and Schuyler emerged side by side as Luke Westenberg followed past Gaserude into third. Schuyler briefly took command of the point on lap 15, but Stenjem returned alongside two laps later. This time it was Stenjem sliding into control of the lead on lap 19 with Dale Nottestad in tow for second. Nottestad drew up behind the new leader, searching for a lane to get to the front. On lap 24, Nottestad began peeking under Stenjem. Nottestad got a good run on the low side as they raced off turn two. Nottestad drew even with Stenjem, stealing the top spot away on lap 26. After a caution on lap 34 for a stalled machine, Nottestad continued to lead while John Ovadal Jr began to work on Stenjem for second. Ovadal cleared in the closing laps, but Nottestad was already well on his way to picking up the win. At the checkers, it was Nottestad followed by Ovadal, Westenberg, Stenjem and Schuyler.

Feature number two, the River’s Edge Meat Market and Catering 50, began with Cody Erdmann and Seth Reamer on the front row. Erdmann took the lead on lap one with Shaun Scheel quickly up to battle Reamer for second. Scheel grabbed the position on lap two, with Michael Grueneberg in tow for third. Scheel drew even with Erdmann at the front on lap four, clearing for the lead a lap later. Scheel began the stretch his lead as the laps ticked away toward the halfway point. Grueneberg shadowed Erdmann for many laps, finally making his move for second on lap 28. John Ovadal Jr moved up to challenge Erdmann for third while Scheel continued to show the way. Ovadal got by Erdmann in the closing laps to gain the third position, but at the front it was Scheel cruising to the checkers for the win. Grueneberg was second with Ovadal, Erdmann and Dale Nottestad completing the top five.

Jake Biever and Tyler Deporter led the field to green for the first of two 30 lap Sportsman features. Biever took the initial lead on lap two with Randy Breunig quickly up to second. Breunig got under Biever on lap three, clearing for the lead into turn three. Breunig immediately began to stretch his advantage while Biever slipped to second ahead of Dan Harris. On lap ten, Biever began to fade slightly, allowing Harris, Chris Chenoweth and Jason Thoma to get past. Chenoweth went right to work on Harris, eventually taking over the second spot on lap 14. Chenoweth spent the remainder of the race trying to reel in Breunig to no avail. At the checkers, it was Breunig for the win followed by Chenoweth, Thoma, Harris and Terry Wangsness.

Jefferson’s Jason Thoma benefitted from some attrition to score the win in the second 30 lap Sportsman main event. Jake Biever took control of the lead from row one with Kevin Schultz back to second. Terry Wangsness moved up to challenge Schultz on lap 14 while Mark Deporter and Thoma moved into the top five. Wangsness got to second and began reeling in the leader, Biever. Wangsness got to Biever’s rear bumper and began looking to his inside with ten laps remaining in the race. Wangsness got under Biever on lap 21. The pair of drivers drifting high through turns one and two, allowing Deporter to pounce on the opening. Deporter slipped past Wangsness for second and pulled alongside Biever at the front. But Deporter experienced a flat right front tire on lap 26, sending him into the door of Biever and forcing the sole caution of the race. This handed the lead over to Wangsness for the restart with Thoma now up to second. As racing resumed, Wangsness slowed drastically as he pulled his machine to the infield. Thoma grabbed the lead and drove way to secure the win. Randy Breunig finished second followed by Tim Coley, Schultz and Dan Harris.

Joe Cross led lap one of the first International feature event from the front row while the battle for second raged behind him. Ashley Gottschalk emerged with the second position on lap two and pulled up alongside Cross a lap later. Gottschalk cleared for the lead on lap five, bringing Mark English along for second. English wasted no time as he made his move on Gottschalk for the lead on lap five. English cleared on lap seven while Josh Marx took a turn next to Gottschalk, racing for second. A caution on lap 11 slowed the pace, setting up a restart with English and Marx on the front row. As they came out of turn four to take the green flag again, Marx appeared to experience a flat right rear tire, forcing him to spin in front of the field. The melee ended his race, setting up English and Mike Lambert on the front row. As racing resumed, English slid out front with Lambert sticking close by. With two laps remaining, Lambert crossed over to the low side of English, drawing even into turn one. The duo raced side by side under the white flag with Lambert holding a slight advantage. Lambert held the advantage through the final circuit, crossing the stripe first to claim the win. English was second with Keith Bell, Neil Higgins and Gottschalk rounding out the top five.

The second International feature began with a caution on the opening lap. Dustin Yanke and Chris Jackson led the field back to green with Yanke moving out front. Noah Pankow quickly charged up to second on lap two as he set his sights on the early leader. By lap four, Pankow was next to Yanke, challenging for the lead. Pankow cleared on lap six and began to pull away from the pack. The leaders ran this way until a caution on lap 13, erased Pankow’s advantage. Pankow and Yanke led the field back to green with Pankow returning to the lead while Yanke fell back into a battle for second with Mark English. English got up to the second spot in the closing laps, but didn’t have enough time to run down Pankow. At the checkers, it was Pankow for the win with English, Scott Hoeft, Yanke and Keith Bell completing the top five.

The first of two 25 lap Hobby Stock features began with Christian Janssen taking the early lead on lap one from the pole. Jordy Egli moved up to second on lap two with Kolton Guralski in tow for third. Guralski quickly dove under Egli on lap three, stealing the second spot away and bringing Dustin Ward along for third. Guralski continued forward, pulling alongside Janssen on lap five while Ward watched from third. After a brief battle, Guralski took over the lead while Ward followed into second. Ward didn’t wait long to make his move on the new leader, driving under Guralski entering turn three. Ward cleared two laps later and quickly began to pull away from the pack. Ward cruised to the checkers from there to secure the victory. Guralski was second followed by Scott Riedner, Chester Williams and Jared Vike.

Christian Janssen once again took the early lead in the second Hobby Stock feature while they battle three wide for second behind him. Scott Riedner emerged in second as he pulled up behind Janssen looking to lead. Riedner made the pass for first on lap five, bringing Philip Wuesthoff along for second. Wuesthoff immediately began to challenge Riedner for the top spot while Jim Tate Jr motored up to join the battle. Wuesthoff drove to the high side of Riedner, trying to draw even with the leader. Wuesthoff did so, inching forward each until eventually clearing on lap 16. Tate used Wuesthoff’s example, also going to the outside of Riedner. Tate made the pass just before a caution slowed the action on lap 19. As racing resumed, Tate began to search for an opening to get by Wuesthoff. Tate powered up alongside Wuesthoff as they flew past the white flag to begin the final lap. They stayed wheel to wheel throughout the final lap as they raced towards the checkers. At the stripe, it was Tate for the win by mere inches over Wuesthoff. Riedner finished third followed by Dan Snyder and Dustin Ward.

Jasper Gronert took the early lead on lap one of the first Road Warrior feature with Bill Reynolds up to second and Chris Gottschalk in third. Reynolds got by Gronert on lap four with Gottschalk in tow for second. Gottschalk began to work over the new leader, searching for a way to get around Reynolds. Bill Sweeney joined the battle for the lead on lap six while Gottschalk tried the high side of Reynolds. Gottschalk got a good run on lap seven, inching forward to take the lead a lap later. Sweeney followed into second, but Gottschalk held him at bay in the final laps to get the win. Sweeney was second with Reynolds, Bryan Gottschalk and Mark Dewey rounding out the top five.

Bill Reynolds charged into the lead of the second Road Warrior feature. After an early caution. Reynolds assumed the lead with Chris Gottschalk quickly up to second. Gottschalk went right to work on Reynolds at the front, getting alongside the leader on lap four. After a five lap battle, Gottschalk took control of the top spot with Reynolds back to second. Gottschalk cruised to the checkers from there to secure his second feature win of the evening. Reynolds was second with Bryan Gottschalk, Mark Dewey and Leroy Gronert completing the top five.

After a lap one caution, Tyler Edmundson took the early lead through turns three and four during the first of two Bandit feature events. On the second circuit, Tyler Deschaine motored under Edmundson to take over the top spot and quickly slip away from the pack. Edmundson dropped to second while Nick Schmidt began to close in. Schmidt caught Edmundson on lap ten, driving to the outside. A lap later, Schmidt was in second and looking to close on Deschaine. But Deschaine stayed strong out front to see the checkers first while Schmidt settled for second. Rounding out the top five were Edmundson, DJ Hill and Bill Kohn.

Garrett Konrath led early in the second Bandit feature with Jeremy Bredeson quickly up to second. Bredeson used a lapped vehicle to get under Konrath and steal the lead on lap ten. Nick Schmidt followed up to second as the laps ticked away. Schmidt pulled up behind Bredeson, looking for a way to the front. Schmidt made several attempts to get alongside the leader, but Bredeson kept him at bay. At the checkers, Bredeson was the winner followed by Schmidt, Konrath, Tyler Deschaine and Chad Olds.

Robbie Rucks and Anna Price paced the first Bandolero feature to green. After a multi car melee that caused a caution on lap one, it was Rucks taking the initial lead. Logan Taylor moved up to second on lap two with Jevin Guralski in tow for third. Guralski drove under Taylor to steal second on lap four with Karter Stark in his tracks for third. Stark drew alongside Guralski on the same lap as they approached Rucks on the point. On lap five, the trio of drivers drove three wide into turn three. Stark emerged with the lead while Guralski tried to stick close by. Guralski remained on Stark’s rear bumper while Stark weaved in and out of lapped traffic. At the checkers, it was Stark for the win followed by Guralski, Rucks, Taylor and Laney Osborne.

Keagan Kehoe and Emma Hunstiger paced the second Bandolero feature to green with Kehoe taking the early lead. Jevin Guralski quickly moved into the top five as the raced towards the front. Meanwhile, Chase Wangsness raced to outside of Kehoe, taking control of the top spot on lap three. Guralski followed into second just before three cautions at the midway point of the race slowed the action. Wangsness and Guralski led the pack back to green with seven laps remaining. After a brief battle, Guralski took over the lead on lap 15. Alex Hartwig moved up to challenge Wangsness for second, stealing the position  with two laps to go. Hartwig made an attempt at the top spot in the closing laps, but Guralski hung on to secure the win. Hartwig settled for second with Laney Osborne, Logan Taylor and Wangsness rounding out the top five.
