Dan Jung Captures Rivers Edge 50
By Andrew Schaller
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, June 11, 2011) Dan Jung of Iron Ridge quickly maneuvered his way to the front of the field on Saturday night at Jefferson Speedway on his way to winning the Rivers Edge Meat Market 50 lap Late Model feature event. The victory marks Jung’s first career feature win at Wisconsin’s Action Track.
Noel Ramge and Bruce Lee paced the field of 18 drivers to the green with Lee grabbing the early lead through turns three and four on lap one. Roger Behlke followed in Lee’s tracks to claim the second spot as he quickly began to apply pressure to Lee at the point. On lap five, Jung made his way to the low side as he pulled even with Behlke looking for second. Jung made the pass and slid up under Lee as they drew even. Jung completed the pass for the lead on six with Lee dropping into second. The battle for third raged behind them as the top two broke away from the pack. Caution waved on lap 16 as point leader, Jason Erickson, spun into turn one. As racing resumed, Jung continued to show the way with Dylan Schuyler up to third and challenging Lee for second. Jung returned to a commanding lead before another caution slowed his efforts on lap 43 when Zach Riddle crashed hard into the front chute wall. Jung survived one more caution period on lap 48 as he owned the final 44 laps of the race to get the win. Lee came home a career best second followed by Schuyler, Jerry Eckhardt and Doug Hahn.
The Sportsman division also saw a first time feature winner as Jim Taylor of Stoughton held off all challenges to claim the 30 lap feature event from the pole. Taylor took control on lap one with defending champion Scott Riedner following him into second. Riedner wasted little time as he quickly began to apply heavy pressure to the early leader. Taylor stayed strong in the outside groove with Riedner flanking him to the inside. On lap ten, James Helmer joined the two leaders as he, too, pressured the pair in front. Taylor remained in control throughout until Riedner slowed on the front stretch for a loose wheel to bring out the sole caution of the race. Helmer inherited the second spot behind Taylor as the green flag waved once again. Helmer took his turn pressuring the leader as he dove to the inside entering turn one. Helmer pulled even with Taylor while Jay Kalbus watched from third. But Taylor would not be denied as he held his own on the outside to cross under the checkers first for the win. Helmer settled for second followed by Kalbus, Kameron Lee and Mark DePorter.
Kyle Stark of Waterloo continued to string of success in the 2011 campaign by capturing another International 20 lap feature event. Dale Smith and Chris Chenoweth led the field to green with Smith taking the initial lead on lap one. Kenny Au pulled even with Smith on lap two as the duo battled for the top spot. They continued to race wheel to wheel until Au gained the advantage on lap seven bringing Mark English along for second. English cleared for the runner up spot with Stark filling up his mirror from third. A lap later, Stark motored under English to steal second as he set his sights on the leader. Stark pulled alongside Au on lap 11, grabbing the lead for himself as they crossed the stripe on lap 12. Stark pulled out to a healthy lead as he cruised on to the checkers for the win. English came home second followed by Au, Gary Stark and Kyle Smith.
Waterloo’s Dustin Ward returned to victory lane, grabbing his third 25 lap Hobby Stock feature in the young season. Ben Monday led on lap one with Sean Watters running second. Watters moved to the low side on lap two, stealing the lead for himself and bringing Chester Williams along for second. Monday remounted a charge on the outside as he motored back alongside Williams on lap seven. Monday flew past the leaders and reclaimed the point on lap nine. Lap 12 saw back to back cautions setting up a 13 lap shootout to the finish. When racing resumed, Ward made his move as he dove to the low side of the speedway and charged up under Monday. Ward quickly cleared for the lead on lap 14 as he began to stretch his advantage over the field. Jim Tate made his way to second by lap 18, but Ward was long gone on the way to getting the win. Tate finished second with Tony Ciano, Monday and Watters rounding out the top five.
An exciting Road Warrior main event ended with Bill Reynolds standing in victory lane with the win. Tin Stephenson and Scott Bush brought the field to green with Stephenson leading early on. Rodger Stephenson snuck up to the inside of his daughter to claim the lead on lap two with Kevin Pauls in tow for second and Reynolds riding in third. Reynolds dove under Pauls to claim second and pull even with Stephenson at the front. Reynolds cleared for the lead on lap six with Rob Lange in tow for second. Lange looked low on the new leader as the two made contact entering turn one. Reynolds drifted high allowing Lange to shoot past into the lead. Reynolds tried to come back on the low side, pulling even with Lange on lap 10. The caution waved on lap 13 with Reynolds being scored as the leader and Lange riding in second. Reynolds held off the late race charge of Bill Sweeney to see the checkers first for the win. Sweeney was second followed by Lange, Pauls and Stephenson.
Rounding out the program was the 20 lap Bandit feature event. Dustin Yanke crossed the stripe first, but was later forced to vacate his win handing the victory to Cory Jansen of Lake Geneva. Yanke took control on lap one from the front row with Jansen falling in line behind him for second. The leaders began to spread out a Yanke drove away from the pack to take a commanding lead. Yanke cruised to the stripe unchallenged and owning a hefty lead over Jansen in second. Following post-race inspection, Jansen was declared the winner of the event with Phil Wuesthoff, Tadd Douglas, Seth Reamer and Heather Stark rounding out the top five.
