Doug Hahn Tops B&M Electric 50

By Andrew Schalle

May 24, 2008; Jefferson WI — Whitewater’s Doug Hahn took control of the B&M Electric 50 lap late model feature early and finished strong to take the win last Saturday night at Jefferson Speedway. Luke Padfield took the initial lead on the opening lap as Hahn settled into second and the field began to string out behind them. On lap seven, Hahn slipped inside Padfield in turn four and took over the top spot down the front stretch.

Five laps later, Hahn had begun to pull away as the field bunched back up behind him. By lap 17, week one winner John Ovadal Jr was knocking on the door of the top five with Jason Erickson in tow. Erickson allowed Ovadal to open the holes for the two to drive through as they motored their way through the top five and into second and third respectively by lap 27. Once the duo cleared traffic, Erickson began to put heavy pressure on Ovadal for the position while Hahn enjoyed the battle in his rear view mirror. Erickson made several attempts on the inside of Ovadal for second, but Ovadal proved strong enough to hold off the advances. The fight for second allowed Hahn to maintain his lead without giving up much ground, and Hahn cruised to the stripe in first followed by Ovadal, Erickson, Tim Sargent and Padfield.

Dave Oswald of Cottage Grove motored his way through traffic to take the victory in the 30 lap sportsman feature event. Dick Reents and Ron Nelson made up row one at the drop of the green with Reents holding the advantage after lap one. Nelson was hanging with Reents till a flat tire forced him to drop into the pack giving second to John Handeland. The first of two cautions flew on lap five for debris, and on the restart, Oswald crept into the top five. On lap eight, Reents got very loose entering turn three and when he checked up, Handeland made contact sending the two into the outside wall ending their evening. The melee handed the lead to Tory Bagley with Oswald on his rear bumper for the restart. Oswald wasted little time as he immediately drove to the inside of Bagley and grabbed the lead on lap ten. Oswald drove out to a healthy advantage on his way to the checkers. Rounding out the top five were Tom Reents, Terry Wangsness, Bagley and RC VanRamsell.

An exciting finish to the international feature saw Brandon Riedner of Waunakee take the checkers to win the 20 lap event. Kenny Au took the early lead from fellow front row starter Ashley Smith on lap two. But Smith came back strong, taking the top spot away from Au three laps later. Riedner followed Smith under Au, taking second with Rodney Mundt sliding into third. Riedner began his challenges on the leader as he managed to get underneath Smith in the corners, but never could get clear for a pass. Reidner charged under Smith each lap, gaining ground every time. Riedner finally got a good run on the final lap, taking sole possession of the lead through turns three and four and flying under the checkers in first. Smith finished second with Mark English, Mundt and Gary Stark rounding out the top five.

Orfordville’s Jimmy Robinson waged an intense battle with Lincoln Keeser ending in Robinson posing in victory lane after the 25 lap hobby stock feature. Keeser took control early after the drop of the green while Robinson moved to fifth. Robinson made pass every other lap, advancing to second by lap 11 and pulling up to Keeser’s rear bumper. Robinson began to look to the inside of Keeser for the lead, pulling even with him on lap 15. Caution waved over the field on lap 16 and Robinson resumed his challenge on the restart, again pulling even with Keeser. The two made contact several times as they leaned on each other through the corners. On lap 19, Keeser pushed up the track in turn two and bounced off the back stretch wall, ending his night and handing the lead to Robinson. Robinson cruised to the win followed by Alan Dorn, Bobby Selsing Jr, Zac Schmidt and Steven Sauer.

Tommy Pfeifer of Madison sliced through the field on his way to the win in the 20 lap bandit feature which was held over from last week’s program due to rain. Terry Ciano took control early with Jody Schmidt on his heels in second. Pfeifer moved into the top five by lap five and quickly made his way to third behind Schmidt in second. Ciano, Schmidt and Pfeifer drove three wide into turn three on lap 12 with Pfeifer taking the lead out of turn four. Meanwhile, Kyle Watters was advancing through the pack and into second with only three laps to go. A caution on lap 18 set up a green/white/checkered finish, but Pfeifer was able to hold Watters off for the win. Finishing third was John Beale with Schmidt fourth and Ciano coming home in fifth.

David Schmidt of Cudahy lead every lap of the regularly scheduled 20 lap bandit feature as he sped to the victory. Schmidt took control immediately on the first lap and pulled out to a big lead. The battle raged behind him as paint and positions were swapped with regularity. Terry Ciano maintained the second position with third being traded amongst several drivers. The only caution of the event flew with five laps remaining, erasing Schmidt’s large advantage. But Ciano was unable to mount a challenge as Schmidt crossed the line first followed by Ciano, Kyle Padfield, Kyle Watters and John Beale.

Next Saturday is a full program of racing highlighted by the Pepsi 50 lap late model feature. Time trials begin at 5:00 with racing at 7 pm. Jefferson Speedway is located half way between Jefferson and Cambridge on Hwy 18. For more information, please visit www.jeffersonspeedway.com.
