Hahn Victorious at Jefferson Speedway
By Larry & Jeanne Starr
July 28, 2007; Jefferson WI — Doug Hahn of Whitewater claimed top honors in the “Scott Oil Co. 50” Late Model feature. Starting inside row 7, Hahn started his trip to the front, as Kyle Taylor claimed the early lead. Taylor’s turn at the point lasted 18 laps, as he opened a quarter lap lead over the field. Defending track champion, John Ovadal claimed the 2nd spot, on lap 13, with Hahn up to the 5th spot.
Caution came, on lap 18, for a spin in turn 1, erasing Taylor’s strong lead. On the restart, Ovadal drove to the inside, claiming the top spot by lap 19. As Ovadal claimed the point, Hahn motored under Roger Behlke for the 3rd spot, closing with Taylor. Motoring into 2nd, on lap 21, Hahn closed with Ovadal. Moving to the inside Hahn launched his bid for the lead, with Ovadal holding strong on the outside. The pair battled for 23 laps, with Hahn pulling along side, many times, but not able to make the pass. Lapped traffic came into play, on lap 42. As they closed with the rear of the field, Ovadal was caught behind lapped cars, giving Hahn the opportunity he had been looking for. Motoring to the front on lap 43, Hahn led the field to the checkers, followed by Ovadal, Steve Dobbratz, Taylor and Behlke.
In Sportsman action Tom Reents of Janesville led exactly one lap, the last one! Starting outside row 6 Reents started for the front as Shaun Scheel grabbed the early lead. A spin, in turn 2, brought the caution flag, on lap 8, with Scheel still at the point and Reents working his way from the rear of the field, behind Dave Oswald and Scott Riedner. Scheel continued to guide the way, with Brady Lilly running a close 2nd. The final caution came, on lap 13, for a multi-car pileup in turn 3. On the restart Lilly moved to the inside claiming the point by lap 17, as Riedner closed with Scheel for the 2nd spot. Riedner claimed 2nd on lap 19, moving to the inside of Lilly. After a 5 lap battle, Riedner pulled ahead of Lilly with Oswald close behind for the 2nd spot, and Reents running 4th. All eyes were on Riedner and Oswald, as they battled for the top spot, with Riedner doing all he could to stay ahead, and Oswald pulling out the stops to make the pass. They tangled, in the 4th turn, on lap 27, recovering without bringing the caution. As Riedner and Oswald tangled, Lilly and Reents flew by on the outside. Lilly led lap 28, but Reents charged forward, to be first at the stripe, by a fender, over Lilly. Rounding out the top 5 were Oswald, Jeff Kohlhoff, and Scheel.
In International action Chris Gottschalk of Jefferson notched the win, in the 20 lap main event. Starting inside row 4 Gottschalk started his drive to the checkers as Craig Henning jumped to the early lead. Henning led the way for 3 laps, before being overtaken by Mike Winters. The race stopped for 1 caution, on lap 7, for a spin in turn 4. Winters led the restart, with Mark English 2nd and Gottschalk up to 3rd. Gottschalk motored around English on lap 12, with Casey Strese close behind, to claim 3rd on lap 13. The final caution came on lap 14, for a spin. Winters led the restart with Gottschalk working the outside. Gottschalk drove past Winters on lap 16, with Strese following for 2nd, on the next lap. At the strip it was Gottschalk for the win followed by Strese, Winters, Kyle Smith, and English.
In Hobby Stock action Steven Sauer of Waterloo won the 25 lap feature. Starting 5th Sauer headed to the front as Mike Manley claimed the early lead. Sauer closed with Manley on lap 11, moving to the inside in his bid for the top spot. Claiming the point on lap 12 Sauer showed the way to the checkers. At the strip it was Sauer for the win followed by Pete Elgas, Bobby Selsing, Tim Lange and Kyle Stark.
In Bandit action Kyle Watters of Stoughton won the 20 lap main event. Starting 14th, Watters headed to the front as Dennis Johnson grabbed the early lead. Johnson was relieved at the point by Mark Dewey, on lap 9. Watters motored past Dewey on lap 15, showing the way to the checkered flag. At the stripe it was Watters for the win followed by Robert Lange, Steve Privett, Kyle Padfield and Tyler Kelley.
