Jarlsberg First to Repeat at Jefferson

By Andrew Schaller

Jefferson’s Kyle Jarlsberg became the first repeat feature winner in the 2010 season for the Late Model division after capturing the Pepsi 50 lap main event Saturday at Jefferson Speedway. Jarlsberg came on strong during the second half of the race, taking the point with 12 laps remaining to get the win.

Roger Behlke and Rob Myers paced the field to green with Myers grabbing the lead on lap two. Behlke dropped in behind with Trent Erdman riding in third. Erdman got a good run on lap eight to take second from Behlke and set his sights on Myers. After a caution on lap nine, Erdman charged under Myers, stealing the top spot on lap ten. Erdman began to stretch his advantage as Bob Kahler moved to third. Kahler muscled up to second just before the second caution waved on lap 22. As racing resumed, point leader Casey Johnson moved to fourth with Jarlsberg in tow to fifth. A lap later, Jarlsberg took advantage when Johnson got loose and moved up to fourth. Jarlsberg quickly dispatched of Myers for third and charged up alongside Kahler looking for second. Jarlsberg completed the pass on lap 31 and set his sights on the leader. Jarlsberg continued to reel in Erdman, catching him on lap 37 and diving under the leader into a side by side battle. Jarlsberg gained the advantage and cleared for the top spot on lap 41, sailing away to the checkers for the win. Erdman settled for second followed by Kahler, Johnson and Doug Hahn.

Dan Schmidt of Farmington lead every lap of the Sportsman 30 lap feature on his way to the win. Starting from the pole, Schmidt took control on lap one from fellow front row starter Mike Acheson. Acheson dropped in line behind Schmidt for second with Tom Schuette in third. Schmidt continued to lead while James Helmer and Scott Riedner made their way through the field and into the top five. Helmer and Riedner continued to fight for the fourth position while the top three remained strong in front. Riedner’s bid for a fifth consecutive feature win was cut down when the laps ran short and Schmidt crossed the stripe first to get the victory. Rounding out the top five were Acheson, Schuette, Riedner and Helmer.

Edgerton’s Mark English got the clean sweep in the International division by claiming fast time in qualifying as well as winning his heat race and the 20 lap feature event. Keith Bell led early on with Matt McKinney in second. While McKinney looked for a way past Bell, Stephen Scheel made his way to third and began to challenge the leaders. After a caution on lap seven, Scheel motored to the inside of McKinney and stole away the second spot. Scheel used his momentum to move up alongside Bell, clearing for the lead on lap eight. Meanwhile, English was slicing through the field and into the top five. English and point leader Chris Gottschalk waged a battle for second which English finally won on lap 13. English moved up to challenge Scheel, catching him on lap 15 and moving to the inside in his bid for the lead. The duo fought door to door over the final five laps with English nipping Scheel at the line for the win. Scheel was second followed by Gottschalk, Kyle Smith and Ashley Smith.

Watertown’s Jim Tate Jr made a late race pass to get the win in the 25 lap Hobby Stock main event. Kyle Riedner took the early lead on lap from pole sitter Ed Klug. Caution came on lap two when Klug spun. When the green returned, Jimmy Robinson dove under Riedner looking to lead. Robinson claimed the point on lap three with Tony Ciano in his tracks for second. Dustin Ward powered in to the top five at the same time, moving up to fourth on lap four. Ward quickly made his way to third a lap later, as he set his sights on the two leaders. After another caution on lap 11, Ward charged under Ciano for second. After completing the pass, Ward went to work on Robinson for the top spot. Tate joined Ward at the front of the pack as the both made their as Ward tried to fight back on the low side. But Tate stayed strong, seeing the checkers first for the win. Ward was second with Robinson, Ciano and Johnny Robinson completing the top five.

Bill Reynolds of Watertown claimed his seventh Road Warrior feature win in a row by winning the 10 lap feature event. Bryan Ellis and Tina Stephenson led the field to green with Ellis the early leader. Brett Carson followed Ellis into second with Reynolds already up to third. Carson slipped under Ellis as Reynolds joined them to make it a three way fight for the lead. Reynolds emerged with the spot on lap three with Roger Stephenson getting by as well for second. Stephenson tried to catch Reynolds, but couldn’t get the job done as Reynolds crossed the stripe first for the win. Roger Stephenson was second with Carson, Tory Bagley and Ellis rounding out the top five.

Barret Hammond of Minneapolis, MN took the win in the 20 lap Bandit feature event. Cory Jansen led lap one with Hammond right behind in second and Dave Schmidt in third. After an early caution on lap two, Schmidt charged to the outside of Hammond looking for second. On lap four, Hammond went to the low side of Jansen with Schmidt going high. The two cleared Jansen and continued their battle, this time for the lead. They fought side by side for most of the remainder of the event, trading the top spot several times. But at the finish, it was Hammond with the advantage getting the win and Schmidt in second. Will Rece was third followed by Jeff LeFave and Phil Wuesthoff.
