Jarlsberg Powers to Pernat’s 50 Victory

By Andrew Schaller
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, August 13, 2011) Kyle Jarlsberg of Jefferson maneuvered to the front of the 18 car Late Model field and ran away to win the Pernat’s Premium Meats 50 lap feature event. Jarlsberg became the eleventh different pilot to capture the checkers in the premier division at Wisconsin’s Action Track in the 2011 season.

Chris Quam and Brandon Pendleton paced the field of some of Wisconsin’s finest hot shoes to the drop of the green flag. Quam quickly gained the advantage through turns one and two on the opening circuit with Trent Erdman trying to follow into second. Erdman completed the pass on lap two as Jarlsberg followed in his tracks for third. Jarlsberg went right to work on Erdman for second as Quam opened up a healthy lead. Jarlsberg cleared for the runner up spot on lap five, just before the first of two caution periods slowed the field. As racing resumed, the leaders bumped and banged each other as they entered the first corner. Jarlsberg slipped to the inside of Quam on lap eight as he drew even with the early leader. Jarlsberg continued to inch forward as Quam tried to hold his ground on the outside. Jarlsberg eventually gained control of the top spot on lap 12, sliding up in front of Quam as the raced off into turn three. The second caution appeared on lap 14 when Roger Behlke made solid contact with the turn three wall. Once racing got back underway, Jarlsberg continued to show the way with Quam staying in his rear view mirror. Point leader Jason Erickson made a late race charge into the top five, but Jarlsberg and Quam were well out in front of the pack as they cruised to the one/two finish. Erickson came home third with Erdman and Noel Ramge rounding out the top five.

The Sportsman division treated the Jefferson Speedway faithful to twin 25 lap features on the evening. Milton’s Brady Lilly claimed the win in the first feature event. The field bunched up entering turn one on the first lap causing point leader Jay Kalbus to retreat to the pit area with a fluid leak, ending his chances in the first feature. Levi Cloute led early as racing got underway with Will Rece following into second. Rece began to work the low side of Cloute as Lilly made his way to third on lap three. Rece cleared for the top spot with Lilly in tow for second on lap four. Lilly quickly dove to the low side of Rece while Tory Bagley and James Helmer fought for third behind them. Lilly finally gained the top spot on lap 11 with Helmer trying to follow him past Rece. Helmer grabbed second on lap 13 as he began to cut into Lilly’s advantage. But Lilly stayed strong on the point to see the checkers first and win feature number one. Helmer was second followed by Kurt Kleven, Rece and Terry Wangsness.

Jay Kalbus of Watertown rebounded from the first feature mishap to capture the checkers in feature number two for the Sportsman. Dan Schmidt and Ken Hoff led the field to green after the invert with Schmidt moving out front on lap one. Tory Bagley followed into second and immediately went to work on Schmidt for the lead. Bagley cleared for first on lap three just as James Helmer claimed the third position. Bagley began to slip away from the pack while Helmer battled with Schmidt for second. Helmer finally cleared on lap 12 as he started to reel in the leader, Bagley. Helmer caught Bagley on lap 19 as he began to peek to the low side. As the duo tried to move past a lapped car, they made contact sending Bagley around and bringing out the caution. Both competitors were forced to the rear on the restart handing the lead over to Kalbus. As racing resumed, Kalbus cruised to the stripe to get the win followed by Brady Lilly, Terry Wangsness, Will Rece and Jim Taylor. Milton’s Brady Lilly was awarded the overall victory by combining his first and second place finishes.

Waterloo’s Kyle Stark continued his domination of the International class by laying claim to his 12th feature win of the season in the 20 lap feature event. John Handeland led lap one as pole sitter Peter Shelley fell back into a battle for second with Neil Higgins. Higgins gained the position on lap three with Kenny Au and Stark in his tracks for third and fourth respectively. Higgins moved to the inside of Handeland for the lead as Stark motored past Au for third on lap five. Higgins cleared for the top spot a lap later with Stark right behind him for second. Stark drove to the outside of Higgins on lap seven, clearing for the lead a lap later and immediately pulling away. Mike Lambert made his way to second on lap ten, but Stark was already on his way to the win. Lambert settled for second followed by Higgins, Au and Mark English.

Jim Tate Jr of Deforest increased his lead in the standings by winning the 20 lap Hobby Stock feature event once again. Jamie Dunn and Jim Wolf paced the field to green as they battle door to door for the top spot. Wolf held the slight advantage as they crossed the line to complete lap one. Wolf grabbed sole possession of the lead on lap two as Mike Manley fired to the outside of him. On lap five, Allen McBride shot up the middle to grab the lead exiting turn four. Meanwhile, Tate made his way into the top five by lap six as he continued to move forward. Tony Ciano moved past Manley for second on lap seven with Tate in tow for the third position. Ciano dove under McBride on lap ten, stealing the lead with Tate still riding in his tracks for second. Ciano decided to protect the inside lane, forcing Tate to go to the high side as he looked to lead. Tate drew even with Ciano on lap 16. Ciano gave up the lead with two laps remaining, but the race wasn’t over yet. Ciano fought back on the low side, pulling even with Tate as they flew past the white flag. But Tate kept his momentum up exiting turn four to own the slight advantage as they crossed under the checkers. Tate got the win with Ciano coming home second. Steven Sauer, Dustin Ward and McBride rounded out the top five.

Bill Reynolds of Watertown got the win in the 12 lap Road Warrior feature event. Kevin Pauls led from the pole with Matt McKinney to his outside on lap one. As the two drivers entered turn three, slight contact resulted in McKinney kissing the wall to bring out the caution. Pauls was forced to the back for his involvement in the incident, handing the lead to Reynolds with Bill Sweeney in second. Reynolds opened up a large lead as racing resumed while Sweeney tried to hold off Scott Pauls for second. Pauls made the pass on lap eight, but Reynolds was already enjoying a big lead on his way to the win. Scott Pauls finished second followed by Rodger Stephenson, Sweeney and Kevin Pauls.

Dave Schmidt of Menomonie picked up the win in the 20 lap Bandit feature event. Josh Marx led early from the pole with Schmidt already riding in second. Schmidt fired to the outside on lap three, trying to draw even with Marx. Lap after lap, Schmidt inched forward as he took the long away around the track. Schmidt pulled into the lead just before the caution waved on lap eight. As racing resumed, Schmidt and Marx broke away from the pack as they cruised to the checkers. At the stripe, it was Schmidt for the win followed by Marx, Josh Lenz, Seth Reamer and Dan Birkett.
