Kyle Jarlsberg Holds On For Win

By Andrew Schaller

August 2, 2008; Jefferson WI — Kyle Jarlsberg of Cambridge managed to fend off the late race challenges of Ty James to claim the Scott Oil Co. 50 lap Late Model feature at Jefferson Speedway. The opening lap of racing was marred by two separate cautions, the second of which for the front row of Jasper Gronert and Russ Grossen making contact and having to move to the rear of the field for the start. The new front row consisted of Dylan Schuyler and Ty James as racing got underway.

The duo battled side by side until James gained the advantage on lap two at the stripe. Chris Quam followed around the outside of Schuyler into second as the high line moved forward. By lap ten, James had begun to space himself out from the rest of the pack while Jarlsberg was moving into third and inside Quam for second. Jarlsberg cleared for the position on lap 14 and set his sights on the leader. Five laps later, Jarlsberg pulled up to the rear bumper of James and to his inside by lap 21. Jarlsberg tried the low side to get by for the lead, but couldn’t make it work. Then, on lap 27, Jarlsberg became loose on the front stretch and slid into turn one. Jarlsberg made contact with James, and escaped with the lead exiting turn two. Jarlsberg looked to pull away as James regrouped and mounted a charge of his own. On lap 42, James caught back up to the leader and began to put heavy pressure on Jarlsberg for the top spot. As the white flag flew, James made one last try to get inside for a pass, but he lost control down the backstretch and spun to the infield while Jarlsberg sped off to the checkers for the win. Rounding out the top five were John Ovadal, Steve Dobbratz, Casey Johnson and Jason Erickson.

In Sportsman action, Tom Reents of Janesville increased his points lead by winning the 30 lap feature event. Ron Nelson and Kody Hubred paced the field at the start with Hubred gaining the early lead as they completed the first lap. The only caution of the race flew on lap two when Bret Schmidt encountered some problems and was forced to retire. Hubred restarted as the leader with Nelson right behind in second. The leaders ran nose to tail as Reents entered the top five on lap ten. Nelson continued to look for a way around Hubred for the top spot while Reents was making his way through the top five and into third by lap 18. On lap 20, while Nelson was making another attempt at grabbing the lead, he got very loose allowing Reents to scoot by for second and charge to the inside of Hubred. Reents cleared for the lead on lap 26 with Tory Bagley in tow for second. Reents tried to get away from the pack, but Bagley pursued him with only two laps remaining. As the two saw the white flag, Bagley looked low entering turn one and got alongside the leader down the backstretch. But Reents managed to hold him off and take the win with Bagley right behind for second. Dave Oswald, Hubred and Nelson completed the top five.

Janesville’s Mark English laid claim to the 20 lap International feature race and extended his points advantage as well. Casey Strese took the initial lead from fellow front row starter Brandon Pendleton as they crossed the stripe to complete lap one. English quickly moved through the field and into the top five on lap five. English grabbed another position every lap as he got to second on lap ten. By this time Strese had a comfortable advantage and English began trying to run him down. But caution flew on lap 13, erasing Strese’s lead and putting English in his rear view mirror for the restart. As the green returned, English quickly moved to the inside of Strese, taking the top spot away on lap 16 and motoring to the checkers and the win. Strese took second with Pendleton, Scott Hoeft and Joe Cross rounding out the top five.

Alan Dorn of Columbus took over the top spot very late in the race to win the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Joe Edwards and Brett Carson led the field to green with Edwards taking the point on lap three after a side by side battle with Carson. Alan McBride followed into second with Dorn in third. Meanwhile, Jimmy Robinson was making his way forward and into the top five by lap nine. Robinson made quick work moving to third a lap later as McBride made a bid for the lead under Edwards. On lap 13, Robinson dove to the inside of McBride forcing a three wide battle for the top spot. Robinson and Edwards emerged side by side with Robinson clearing for the lead on lap 17. Robinson had begun to pull away until the yellow waved on lap 23 setting up a green/white/checker finish. As green flag racing resumed, Robinson experience mechanical difficulties and was forced to retire from the event. This handed the lead to Dorn, who took it and ran to the stripe for the win. Following him under the checkers were Bobby Selsing, Tim Lange, Edwards and Zac Schmidt.

Madison’s Tommy Pfeifer motored to the front of the pack to claim the win in the 20 lap Bandit feature. Al Stillman took control from the pole on lap one and proceeded to lead most of the race while they battle behind him. By lap five, Pfeifer was shadowing the top five from sixth. On lap eight Pfeifer decided to make his move as he slipped into fourth and charged to the outside for third. Pfeifer moved forward into third and then second as he looked to Stillman for the lead. He pulled even with the leader on lap 13, clearing for the top spot a lap later and driving away from the rest. Pfeifer saw the checkers first as he claimed another feature win followed by Tony Ciano, Chad Olds, Stephen Scheel and David Schmidt.
