Nottestad a Five Time Winner

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, August 31, 2013) Dale Nottestad captured his fifth Late Model feature of the season on Saturday night at Jefferson Speedway. The win helped the Cambridge pilot increase his lead in the standings with only one week remaining until we crown our champions at Wisconsin’s Action Track.

Bruce Lee and Craig Phillips brought the field of 18 Late Models to the green with Lee grabbing control of the top spot on lap one. Tim Sargent charged alongside Phillips as they battled for second with Chris Quam watching from fourth. On lap four, Phillips got sideways through turns three and four collecting Dylan Schuyler as they made hard contact with the front stretch wall to force the first of three caution periods. Lee restarted as the leader with Sargent now in second and Quam running third. One lap after racing got back underway, Quam and Sargent made contact entering turn one resulting in Sargent going around bringing out caution number two. Both drivers were forced to the rear of the field for the restart with Tory Bagley now shadowing the leader and Noel Ramge in third. As racing resumed, Nottestad slipped by Ramge to claim third while Bagley began to challenge Lee at the front of the pack. The third and final caution flew on lap nine halting Bagley’s efforts to get by Lee. But Bagley returned to action as the green waved once again, peeking to the low side of Lee as he looked to lead. Bagley drew even with Lee, clearing for the top spot on lap 12 and bringing Nottestad along for second. Nottestad began to size up the new leader until making his move on lap 20. Nottestad slid under Bagley, pulling alongside and eventually clearing for the point on lap 22. Defending champ, Casey Johnson followed in to second and they began to pull away from the rest of the field. Green flag conditions over the remainder of the event allowed Nottestad to remain solidly in command until finally crossing under the checkers for the win. Johnson came home second with Bagley, Steve Dobbratz and Lee rounding out the top five.

In Sportsman action, Robert Hansberry of Beloit picked up his first career feature win at Jefferson Speedway by claiming the 25 lap main event. Jason Kubicz led early from the pole with Tim Coley and Russ Nicholson battling for second behind him. Coley claimed the spot on lap five just before the sole caution of the race slowed the action. As racing resumed, Coley began peeking to the low side of Kubicz looking to lead. Coley drew even with Kubicz on lap seven, clearing for the lead a lap later with Hansberry in his tracks for second. Hansberry wasted little time as he charged under Coley on lap nine. After a brief battle, Hansberry claimed the point on lap 11 as they top two began to break away from the field. Hansberry remained in control of the spot as he cruised to the checkers to get the win. Coley was second across the stripe, but was forced to vacate his position following post-race inspection. Second went to Seth Lootans followed by Mark Deporter, Jason Thoma and Steven Sauer.

Watertown’s Chris Chenoweth did his best to close the gap on the International point leader as he came away with the win in the 20 lap feature race. Keith Bell took the initial lead from the pole with Casey Strese moving up to second. Chenoweth moved into the top five just before a caution slowed the pace on lap seven. Chenoweth picked his way up to second through two more cautions and found himself on the leader’s rear bumper with six laps to go. Chenoweth drove to the low side of Bell as they raced side by side for the lead. Chenoweth cleared for the top spot on lap 15 and immediately began to check out from the field while Bell tried to hang on to the second spot. At the checkers, it was Chenoweth for the win followed by Bell, Mike Lambert, Seth Reamer and Jamie Shelley.

Another intense main event in the Hobby Stock division ended with Dustin Ward of Columbus in victory lane. Jeff LeFave and Scott Riemer brought the field to green with LeFave leading lap one. Riemer drew back even with LeFave on lap two as Phil Wuesthoff made it a three way fight for the lead. LeFave and Riemer emerged door to door once again with Lucas Buckingham now up to third behind them. LeFave and Riemer still battled for the lead on lap five when Buckingham, Ken Scott and Mark Deporter went three wide for third. A lap later, LeFave got loose allowing Deporter to charge up alongside Riemer in a new battle for the lead. On lap seven, Deporter claimed the top spot for himself with Ward in tow for second. Ward began to search for a way around the new leader and found an opening on lap ten. Ward drew even with Deporter while Tony Ciano made his way to third. Ward completed the pass on lap 14 as the leaders began to weave their way through lapped traffic. Ward stayed out front all the way to the checkers as he picked up the win. Deporter was second with Ciano, Bobby Selsing Jr and Cody Buchs completing the top five.

Chris Gottschalk of Fort Atkinson picked up the win in the 15 lap Road Warrior feature event. Rodger Stephenson led early from the pole with Jordan Lamb riding in second. By lap three. Gottschalk and point leader Bill Sweeney were battling for a spot in the top five with Stephenson still out front. Sweeney got the advantage over Gottschalk as he began to slice his way through the top five on his way to the front. By lap five, Sweeney was second with Gottschalk following his every move into third. Sweeney drove under Stephenson looking to lead on lap six. Sweeney cleared for the top spot a lap later with Gottschalk staying right in his tracks for second. Gottschalk began to search for an opening to get by the new leader. With four laps to go, Gottschalk got under Sweeney entering turn one. The duo battled wheel to wheel over the final four laps with neither driver giving an inch. At the stripe for the final time, it was Gottschalk by a slight margin over Sweeney to get the win. Rounding out the top five were Stephenson, Bill Reynolds and Lamb.

Dousman’s Josh Marx came home the winner in the 20 lap Bandit feature event. Tyler Deporter took the early lead with Marx up to second. After a caution on lap two. Deporter continued to show the way with Marx right behind and Adam Schook in third. On lap eight, Deporter appeared to have a tire go down allowing Marx to fire past into the lead just before a caution slowed the pace. As racing resumed, Tom Pfeifer began to make his way to the front of the field, claiming third on lap 11. Pfeifer slipped by Schook to claim second on lap 13 and began to close the gap on Marx out front. Pfeifer caught the leader with three laps to, but problems with his front suspension forced him to slow and stop bringing out a yellow flag. Schook reclaimed the runner up spot, but Marx had him covered over the final circuits to get the win. Schook was second followed by Noah Pankow, Brandon DeLacy and Josh Rusch.

Next Saturday, September 7, is Season Championship Night presented by the Havill Automotive Group. Extended feature laps in all divisions including a 65 lap Late Model main event will cap off the 2013 regular season. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm sharp.
