Nottestad Asserts Dominance at State Championships

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, September 14, 2013) The weekend started roughly for the newly crowned Late Model champion, Dale Nottestad of Cambridge. After experiencing difficulties during qualifying of the 33rd annual Wisconsin State Championships, Nottestad attacked the field with a vengeance on the way to winning both 75 lap Big 8 Series feature races en route to claiming the overall title of Wisconsin State Champion in 2013.

Tim Sargent and Kyle Jarlsberg led the 26 car field to green to begin the first feature. Sargent took control of the caution filled race on lap one as Jarlsberg fell back into a fight for second with Casey Johnson. Johnson claimed the position just before the first yellow slowed the action on lap four for the stalled machine of Tory Bagley. Several cautions followed the first with Sargent showing the way and Johnson claiming second in front of Jarlsberg on each restart. Steve Dobbratz joined the battle up front on lap 15 when Johnson got loose in turn two allowing Jarlsberg to slip by for second with Dobbratz following into third. After another caution on lap 21, Dobbratz moved up to challenge Jarlsberg for second allowing Sargent to slip away from the pack slightly. On lap 28, Dobbratz and Jarlsberg made contact resulting in Dobbratz spinning and collecting Zack Riddle to force another caution period. Jarlsberg was forced to the rear for his involvement handing second back to Johnson with Nottestad now up to third. As racing resumed, Nottestad took over second from Johnson as the top three began to break away from the field. Nottestad began to pressure Sargent who had been leading since the opening lap. Nottestad drew even with Sargent on lap 43. After swapping paint several times, the yellow flag slowed their battle on lap 50. Nottestad returned to the low side of Sargent when racing got back underway. This time, Nottestad inched his mount in front of Sargent, clearing for the lead on lap 55. After one more caution on lap 58, Johnson was able to wrestle second away from Sargent while Nottestad stretched his lead. At the checkers, it was Nottestad for the win of feature number one followed by Johnson, Sargent, Dan Lensing and Jon Reynolds, Jr.

The second 75 lapper got underway with Dave Edwards and Jerry Eckhardt fighting for control from row one. Edwards held the advantage on lap one with Eckhardt still to his outside. Eckhardt charged back alongside Edwards on lap two, clearing a lap later with Jesse Bernhagen up to third. Eckhardt and Edwards opened up a healthy lead with Bernhagen holding off Trent Erdman for third. Meanwhile, Nottestad and Johnson made their way through the field with Nottestad moving into the top five on lap 11. Nottestad pulled up alongside Erdman on lap 18, claiming fourth and third on the same circuit with Johnson trying to stay on his rear bumper. Nottestad continued to motor towards the front, catching Edwards for second on lap 23 and beginning to close quickly on Eckhardt out front. . By lap 28, Nottestad was shadowing the leader. Nottestad dropped to the low side of Eckhardt, drawing even and nosing out front just before the first caution of the race slowed the pace. Nottestad restarted on the point with Eckhardt and Johnson battling for second. On the restart, Johnson took over the runner up position as the top two pilots broke away from the pack. On lap 34, Eckhardt got way high through turns three and four allowing Jarlsberg to slip past for third with Alex Papini in tow for fourth. Jarlsberg and Papini swapped positions as they fought for third while Nottestad and Johnson continued to open up a large lead. On lap 60, a major melee in turns three and four forced the field to stop on the front stretch while the mess was cleared. Once racing resumed, Nottestad remained in clear control with Johnson staying in his rear view mirror. The leaders cruised to the checkers with Nottestad the winner and Johnson in second. Rounding out the top five were Papini, Jarlsberg and Erdman. Nottestad claimed the overall title with Johnson finishing second.

Kyle Chwala of Lake Mills claimed the overall title in the Sportsman division after the completion of twin 35 lap features yielding two different race winners. Doug Paul and Seth Lootans paced the field in the first feature with Paul claiming the initial lead. Lootans fought back on the low side, drawing even with Paul and eventually passing for the top spot on lap eight. Mark Deporter followed Lootans past Paul on lap ten. Deporter began looking to the low side of Lootans immediately. Deporter pulled up next to the leader on lap 11, clearing for the lead two laps later. Shortly after that, Lootans got loose allowing Paul and Steven Sauer to slip past. Jason Thoma joined Sauer as they fought for third, but contact on lap 20 resulted in Sauer spinning to force the sole caution of the race. Paul restarted behind Deporter with Chwala now up to third. As racing resumed, Chwala got around Paul for second, but Deporter remained out front to the finish to get the win. Chwala was second followed by Jim Tate Jr, Robert Hansberry and Kody Hubred.

Sauer and Jay Kalbus led the second race to green with Kalbus leading lap one. Sauer battled back to claim the point on lap two with Terry Wangsness following into second and Hubred up to third. Sauer was able to open up a large lead while Wangsness tried to hold off Hubred for second. Hubred took the spot on lap 16 with Hansberry in tow. Hansberry quickly began to challenge Hubred, taking second away on lap 20 just before the yellow flag slowed the field. As racing resumed, Hansberry began searching for a way around Sauer. But Sauer continued to hold off his advances lap after lap. A final caution on lap 32 set up a three lap shootout to the finish with Sauer still showing the way in front of Hansberry and Chwala. The leaders remained single file over the final laps with Sauer capturing the win followed by Hansberry, Chwala, Hubred and Deporter. Chwala was named the overall champion by combining finishes of second and third with Hansberry finishing second overall.

In International action, it was Chris Chenoweth of Watertown claiming the 40 lap main event. Peter Shelley took the early lead on lap one with Keith Bell and John Handeland battling for second. Handeland claimed the position with Chenoweth already up to third on lap four. Chenoweth took over the second spot on lap six as he moved up to challenge the early leader. The sole caution of the race flew on lap eight for fluid on the racing surface. As racing resumed, Chenoweth quickly drew even with Shelley, clearing on lap ten and immediately pulling away from the pack. Meanwhile, 2013 champion Mike Lambert was making his way to through the top five. Lambert found himself in second on lap 22 as he tried to cut into Chenoweth’s large advantage. But Chenoweth stayed in command over the final laps on his way to the checkers for the win. Lambert was second with James Bell, Shelley and Handeland rounding out the top five.

New Lisbon’s Dave Trute claimed the 30 lap Hobby Stock championship feature event. Jimmy Robinson took the early lead on lap one from the pole while Lucas Buckingham and Tony Ciano fought for second. Ciano claimed the position on lap three with Trute following into third. After a caution on lap five, Trute moved under Ciano, clearing for second on lap seven. Trute continued to move forward, drawing even with Robinson on lap nine in a fight for the lead. Trute claimed sole possession of the top spot on lap eleven as the leaders lined up single file. Another caution on lap 23 slowed the field with Trute the leader in front of Robinson and Ciano. In the closing laps, 2013 champion Bobby Selsing Jr made a furious charge to the front, but ran out of laps and settled for second behind Trute. Robinson was third followed by Ciano and Buckingham.

Watertown’s Bill Reynolds picked up the win in the 25 lap Road Warrior feature event. Brett Carson led lap one from the front row with Reynolds already challenging Tom Dorn for second. Reynolds captured second on lap two bringing Bill Sweeney along for third. Reynolds began peeking to the low side of Carson looking to lead. Reynolds drew even with Carson on lap ten, clearing for the lead a lap later. Chris Gottschalk charged up to join the battle at the front as he moved past Sweeney and Carson to claim second on lap 13. Gottschalk moved up to challenge the new leader while Sweeney made his way into third. On lap 17, Reynolds got a little loose allowing Gottschalk to pull alongside the leader. After a brief side by side battle, a caution on lap 19 slowed the action with Reynolds still out front and Gottschalk on his rear bumper. Gottschalk began searching for an opening once racing resumed, but Reynolds held off his advances to see the checkers first. Gottschalk settled for second followed by Sweeney, Tadd Douglas and Carson.

Twin 20 lap Bandit features saw the field racing on the large track for the first time. Steve Dickson of Rockton, IL, claimed the overall title when the dust settled on the event. Josh Marx and Dennis Wuesthoff kicked off feature number one with Marx claimed the initial lead. Devon Dixon slipped past Wuesthoff on lap three as he and Marx broke away from the pack. On lap 11, Dixon began to challenge Marx on the high side. But before he could complete a pass, Marx went up in flames as they raced down the backstretch to force a caution and end the evening for Marx. Dixon restarted on the point in front of Justin Schultz in second. Dixon remained in control over the final laps to pick up the win followed by Schultz, Wuesthoff, Dickson and Heather Stark.

The second feature began with Noah Pankow and Justin Thomas on row one. Pankow took the early lead with Nick Schmidt in tow for second and Dickson up to third. Brandon DeLacy joined the battle when he took to the high side of the speedway. Pankow, Schmidt and DeLacy raced three wide into turn three on lap three with all three looking to lead. A lap later, contact between Pankow and Schmidt resulted DeLacy grabbing control with Dickson following into second. Dickson wasted little time as he began to pressure the new leader. Dickson tried to low side on lap six with DeLacy holding him off initially. Dickson returned to the bottom on lap ten as the battled wheel to wheel. Dickson inched forward lap after lap. But DeLacy fought back on the high side as they raced door to door. The duo flew past the white flag with nothing settled to begin the final circuit. Dickson gained the advantage as they raced down the back stretch one final time. Dickson stayed out front exiting turn four and he crossed the stripe first to claim the victory. DeLacy was second followed by Schmidt, Derek Dixon and Devon Dixon. Combining finishes of fourth and first, Dickson was crowned the overall champ with Devon Dixon second.

This concludes the 2013 racing season at Wisconsin’s Action Track. Jefferson Speedway would like to thank all the race teams, sponsors and fans for a great season! Stay tuned to www.jeffersonspeedway.com for updates and info regarding future events.
