Ovadal Survives to Win King Kollision 50

By Andrew Schaller
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, August 06, 2011) Watertown’s John Ovadal Jr returned from an early wreck in his heat race and avoided another accident in the feature to win the King Kollision 50 lap Late Model feature at Wisconsin’s Action Track. Ovadal picked up some valuable points in his quest to catch current point leader, Jason Erickson, for the season title.

Scott Lindsay and Chris Quam brought the field to the green flag with Lindsay taking the initial lead exiting turn two. Quam fought back on the outside as they raced down the backstretch on lap one. Lindsay cleared for the lead momentarily on lap two with Quam falling in line for second. A lap later, Quam gave the inside line a try, drawing even with Lindsay and eventually clearing for the top spot on lap four. Quam began to stretch his advantage while Lindsay tried to hold off Shaun Scheel for the second spot. Scheel took control of second on lap ten with Tommy Pecaro in tow for third. Meanwhile Ovadal was making his way into the top five and into fourth by lap 12. Ovadal ran Pecaro down and stole third away on lap 18 as he teamed up with Scheel to run down Quam on the point. The duo closed on Quam lap after lap, finally catching him on lap 30. Scheel began to apply heavy pressure to the leader as they touched several times with Quam maintaining control of the lead. On lap 38, they made contact once again entering turn one, sending Quam spinning and bringing out the first caution of the race. Both drivers were forced to the rear for the restart, handing the top spot to Ovadal with Dylan Schuyler running in second. Ovadal survived one more caution with six laps remaining as he took the checkered flag first to secure the win. Schuyler finished second followed by Jason Erickson, Casey Johnson and Roger Behlke.

Jay Kalbus of Watertown captured the 30 lap Sportsman main event after a late race pass netted him the lead. Will Rece led lap one with Kody Hubred remaining to the inside of him for second. Hubred continued to work the low groove while Jim Taylor and Mark Deporter battled for third behind them. Hubred began to slip on lap nine handing second over to Taylor while Rece shot out into the lead. Tory Bagley followed into third with Jason Thoma in tow for fourth. Bagley and Thoma moved up into a three wide fight for second with Taylor holding his own in the middle. Thoma and Bagley emerged side by side as Kalbus followed them past Taylor. The caution waved on lap 21 when Thoma spun in turns one and two. Bagley restarted in second behind Rece with Kalbus in third. As racing resumed, Bagley dove under Rece entering turn one. Bagley couldn’t make it stick as he dropped back alongside Kalbus for second. Rece got extremely loose on lap 24 as a scramble for the lead ensued. The caution waved once again as the field bunched up behind them. Bagley restarted as the leader with Kalbus filling up his mirror in second. Once racing got back underway, Kalbus quickly jumped to the inside of Bagley, claiming the point with only four laps to go. Kalbus cruised to the stripe to get the win with Kurt Kleven making a last lap pass for second. Bagley, Rece and James Helmer rounded out the top five.

In International action, it was Kyle Stark of Waterloo picking up yet another 20 lap feature victory. Travis Schneeberg led lap one as the field stacked up behind him. Neil Higgins and James Bell made it a three way battle for the top spot on lap four as Mark English and Stark entered the top five behind them. Higgins grabbed control of the top spot with English charging under Schneeberg for second. English cleared for second on lap five with Stark in tow for the third position. Stark motored to the outside of English on lap seven as he looked to claim second. A lap later, Stark dove in front of English entering turn one as the pair of drivers made contact. Stark hung on to remain in second as he set his sights on Higgins at the front. Stark made quick work of Higgins as he immediately began to pull away from the pack. English eventually moved into second, but Stark was already on his way to the checkers to get the win. English finished second with Higgins, Devon Dixon and Mike Lambert completing the top five.

Chester Williams of Waukesha got to the front and hung on to win the 20 lap Hobby Stock main event. Jamie Dunn and Jim Wolf led the field to green with Dunn taking the early lead on lap one. Sean Watters moved into the high groove as he looked to pull even with Dunn on lap two. After a three lap battle, Watters claimed the top spot just before the caution waved when Dunn got sideways exiting turn two. Watters restarted at the front with Williams riding in second. As racing resumed, Williams charged to the inside of Watters looking to lead. The duo raced door to door for several laps as Williams continued to inch forward. Williams finally cleared for the lead with five laps remaining. Despite beginning to show smoke, Williams hung on during the final circuits to see the checkers first and get the win. Tony Ciano finished second followed by Dustin Ward, Jim Tate Jr and Watters.

Rodger Stephenson of Cambridge dominated the 15 lap Road Warrior feature to get the win in the event. Matt McKinney led lap one with Stephenson quickly moving up to second. Stephenson went right to work on the early leader, peeking to the low side on lap two. Stephenson moved past McKinney a lap later as he pulled out to a comfortable lead. Scott Pauls made his way to second on lap nine, but Stephenson was already on his way to the win. Pauls settled for second followed by McKinney, Rob Lange and Bill Sweeney.

Brandon Johnson of Avalon got to the front early and held on to win the 20 lap Bandit feature event. Felicia Dewey led as the green flag dropped over the field on lap one. Before she could complete the lap, Johnson and Michael Heimann motored around either side of Dewey entering turn three. Johnson emerged with the lead as Heimann pulled into second. Keith Erickson tried to make the high line work as he moved into the top three on lap eight. Erickson made a run alongside Heimann for second as he tried to draw even with the leader. But Erickson began to slip back while Johnson stretched his lead over the pack. As they crossed under the checkers, it was Johnson out front for the win with Heimann, Phil Wuesthoff, Erickson and Tadd Douglas rounding out the top five.

Next Saturday, August 13, is a full program of racing highlighted by the Pernat’s Premium Meats 50 lap Late Model feature. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm sharp.
