Ramge Rules Night at Jefferson Speedway
by Andrew Schaller
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, July 02, 2011) Helenville’s Noel Ramge dominated the Newville Auto Salvage 50 lap Late Model feature at Jefferson Speedway on Saturday night. Ramge led from start to finish picking up his first win of the 2011 campaign at Wisconsin’s Action Track.
Scott Lindsay and Ramge made up row one at the start. Coming to the green, Lindsay got very loose allowing Ramge to take control entering the first turn on lap one. Lindsay fell into line behind Ramge for second with Bruce Lee running in third. The first of three caution periods came on lap seven when Dylan Schuyler and Casey Johnson tangled in turn four. As racing resumed, the top three spread themselves out at the front with Ryan Zielski and Chris Quam battled for fourth. On lap 16, Zielski slid up in front of Quam causing contact between to two competitors. As a result, both drivers slowed slightly to correct their rides allowing John Ovadal to shoot past into fourth. Ovadal began to reel in the leaders until the second caution on lap 26 slowed the field. On the restart, Lindsay continued to pressure Ramge at the front as Ovadal maneuvered past Lee for the third spot. The final caution appeared on lap 30 setting up a 20 lap shootout to the finish. Once the field was back under the green, Jason Erickson began to challenge Ovadal for the third spot while Lindsay stayed close to the rear bumper of Ramge. Erickson slipped past Ovadal on lap 34, but Ovadal returned the favor a lap later to regain the third spot. Lindsay stayed glued to Ramge’s rear bumper over the closing laps, but Ramge kept him in his rear view mirror on his way to the checkers to pick up the win. Lindsay was second followed by Ovadal, Erickson and Zielski.
In Sportsman action, Brady Lilly of Milton picked up the 30 lap feature win after a late race pass to take the lead. Scott Riedner took the early lead on lap one from the pole with Mark Deporter up to second and Stephen Scheel in third. Deporter looked to the low side of Riedner on lap seven. Scheel took advantage of the opening on the outside to motor past Deporter into second. Scheel began to work over Riedner for the top spot while Lilly and Jay Kalbus closed on the duo. Lilly caught Scheel and moved to his inside on lap 16 while Kalbus watched from fourth. Scheel relinquished the spot on lap 18 as Lilly slid up alongside Riedner on the point. Lilly continued to inch forward until he cleared for the lead on lap 22. Kalbus claimed the second spot just before the sole caution of the race appeared on lap 27. As racing resumed, Kalbus began to pressure the new leader to his inside entering turn one. Kalbus drew even with Lilly as they battled wheel to wheel over the final two circuits. Lilly managed to nip Kalbus at the line as they flew under the checkers to get the win. Kalbus settled for second followed by Kurt Kleven, Jason Thoma and Terry Wangsness.
Waterloo’s Kyle Stark drove away in the final 10 laps to win the 25 lap International feature. Darren Brown and Chris Gottschalk led the field to the green, but Devon Dixon dove to the inside to take the lead on lap 1. After a caution on lap 6, Kyle Stark cracked the top five as Dixon remained at the point. Stark worked to the inside of Mark English for second on lap 10 and he used the same line to win a three-way battle with Dixon and English on lap 16. Stark then pulled away for the win with Dixon, English, Ken Au and Mike Lambert rounding out the top five.
Jim Tate Jr. of Madison took advantage of a late race caution to win the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature. Rodger Stephenson won the front row battle with Jeff LeFave for the early lead. After an early caution, Dan Schmidt dove to the inside on the lap four restart and moved from third to first by lap eight. Schmidt built up a lead as Tate worked into the top five on lap 14 and all the way to second on lap 20. A caution on lap 22 erased a straightaway lead for Schmidt and gave Tate a chance to drive to the outside of Schmidt in turn four following the restart. Tate help the point as Schmidt, Tony Ciano, Stephenson and Brent Gergen wrapped up the top five.
Michael White of Janesville took home the Road Warrior 15 lap feature with a mid-race pass. Leonard Reimer and Rodger Stephenson battled for one lap up front with Stephenson taking the early lead. White worked his way into second on lap four and then three laps later Stephenson was shown the black flag for not racing in the same fashion he timed in. White took over the lead when Stephenson pulled off the track. With two laps left, Rob Lange started to pressure White, but the Janesville pilot held on for the win. Lange was second, followed by Scott Pauls, Bill Sweeney and Tim Ellis.
The night ended with Marshall’s Seth Reamer making an outside pass to win the 20 lap Bandit feature. Brandon Johnson took the early lead from fellow front row starter Dustin Yanke. Johnson kept to the inside as a number of drivers looked to his outside. On lap 11, Reamer was able to use the outside groove to take over the lead two laps later. Reamer held off Phil Wuesthoff for the final seven laps to grab the win. Heather Stark, Derek Dixon and Brandon Riedner rounded out the top five.
Next Saturday, July 9, is a full program of racing highlighted by the B&M Electric 50 lap Late Model feature. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm. Jefferson Speedway is located halfway between Jefferson and Cambridge on Hwy 18. Please visit www.jeffersonspeedway.com for more information.
