Sargent Surges to Victory

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, May 25, 2013) Tim Sargent of South Beloit, IL, shook off some early season gremlins at Wisconsin’s Action Track and ended his evening in victory lane after capturing the Pepsi 50 lap Late Model feature. “The Sarge” held off all challenges en route to leading every lap of the main event to win his first feature of the season.

Sargent and Ty James paced the field to the green flag. Sargent led lap one, clearing for the top spot as they crossed the stripe to complete the opening circuit. James fell in line behind Sargent as he began to apply heavy pressure to the leader while Brandon Pendleton moved into third. Tory Bagley got by Pendleton just before the first of four cautions slowed the field. Sargent continued to show the way as racing resumed while Bagley and Pendleton battled for third. On lap 21, contact between Bagley and Pendleton resulted in the second caution as Bagley spun exiting turn two. Both drivers were relegated to the rear on the restart as Stephen Scheel took over the third spot. Sargent began to stretch his advantage once racing got back underway with James still in second. On lap 32, Scheel made a move to get by James for second with Casey Johnson in tow for third. A lap later, James pulled his mount off the racing surface as he experienced mechanical difficulties. Sargent’s lead continued to grow with Scheel now in second and Johnson on his rear bumper. A caution on lap 40 erased Sargent’s large lead, setting up a ten lap shootout to decide the winner. A good restart by Sargent allowed him to maintain his advantage over the pack as Scheel tried to hold off Johnson in second. After one final caution with two laps remaining, Sargent once again restarted well on his way to the checkers to pick up the win. Scheel finished second with Johnson, Dale Nottestad and Zack Riddle rounding out the top five.

Jefferson’s Jason Thoma put an end to the season opening streak of four feature wins by Jim Tate Jr as he claimed the 25 lap Sportsman main event while keeping Tate in his rear view mirror. Jay Kalbus led lap one from the pole while Jason Kubicz, Jason Dunn and Jim Taylor battling for second. Kubicz claimed the spot on lap two as Thoma and Tate entered the top five. Thoma used the low side to move through the pack and under Kubicz on lap five. Thoma cleared for second on lap six with Tate in his tracks for third. Thoma continued his march to the front, peeking under Kalbus entering turn one on lap nine. A lap later, Thoma was out front with Tate continuing to shadow his every move. Tate began searching for a line to get around the new leader, but Thoma held off his every advance. At the checkers, it was Thoma for his first feature win of the season with Tate settling for second. Third was Kalbus followed by Steven Sauer in fourth and Taylor finishing fifth.

Chris Chenoweth of Watertown got to the front of the 20 lap International feature and checked out from the field to pick up the win. Dylan Buckingham and Keith Bell led the field to green. On the opening lap, Seth Reamer joined the pair at the front to create a three wide fight for the lead. Reamer emerged with the top spot on lap two as Bell followed into second. On lap four, Reamer spun after dropping fluid on the speedway to bring out the sole caution of the race. Bell restarted as the leader with Neil Higgins in second and Joe Cross third. On lap six, Chenoweth slipped by Cross for third and pulled up alongside Higgins who was running second. Chenoweth cleared for second on lap seven and continued forward next to Bell on the point. A lap later, Chenoweth was out front and building a large lead over the rest of the pack. Mike Lambert eventually made his way up to second on lap 15, but Chenoweth was already well on his way to the checkers for the win. Lambert was second followed by Casey Strese, Higgins and Cross.

Tony Ciano of Janesville got to the front and held off a hard charging James Helmer to get the win in the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Jeff LeFave took the initial lead on lap one with Jim Wolf in second. Ciano entered the top five on lap three with Helmer right behind. Ciano made his way up to third before the first of two cautions slowed his efforts on lap five. On the restart, Ciano drove to the high side, passing Wolf for second and setting his sights on LeFave at the front. Ciano charged past LeFave to claim the point on lap seven with Helmer mimicking his moves into second and Bobby Selsing following as well into third. Helmer began to pressure the new leader as he searched for a way to get by. The second and final caution waved on lap 18 setting up a seven lap shootout to the finish. Helmer once again pressured Ciano as they got back to racing, trying to use the bottom lane to make a pass. Helmer got a good run on lap 21, drawing even with Ciano. The duo raced side by side past the white flag to begin the final lap with Selsing watching closely from third. Ciano gained the advantage as they flew down the back stretch. At the stripe, it was Ciano for the win with Helmer hanging on for second and Selsing in third. Lucas Buckingham was fourth followed by Jamie Tate in fifth.

In Road Warrior action, it was Travis Schneeberg picking up the trophy after winning the 20 lap feature event. Mike Storkson led lap one with his brother, Kenny Storkson in second. Schneeberg charged up to third on lap two and moved under Kenny Storkson for second. Schneeberg claimed the position on lap three as he looked to the low side of Mike Storkson at the front. Schneeberg drew even with Storkson on lap five. After a brief side by side battle, Schneeberg grabbed control of the top spot on lap six. After a caution on lap with, Schneeberg began to open up a large advantage over the field while Brett Carson fought with Mike Storkson for second. Carson eventually claimed the spot, but Schneeberg was already well on his way to the checkers for the win. Carson finished second followed by Rob Lange, Jared Larson and Bill Sweeney.

Derek Dixon of Janesville was awarded the victory of the 20 lap Bandit main event. Tyler White took the early lead on lap one from the pole with Josh Rusch dropping into second. Dixon took to the high side of the speedway as he began picking off cars on his way to the front. By lap four, Dixon was on the rear bumper of White and challenging for the lead. Lap after lap, Dixon tried to get a run past White for the top spot. But each time, White held him at bay to stay out front. White crossed under the checkers first, but following post-race inspection, was forced to vacate his finishing position. Dixon was handed the win with Josh Marx, Nick Schmidt, Rusch and Brandon DeLacy completing the top five.
