Scheel Shines at Jefferson Speedway

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, August 09, 2014) Shaun Scheel of Lake Mills benefitted from an early caution to take over the top spot in the Serenity Concepts 50 lap Late Model main event. Scheel held off a heavy challenge late in the race to capture the victory, his first of the 2014 season.

John Ovadal Jr and Bruce Lee paced the field to green with Ovadal grabbing early control on lap one. Tory Bagley moved past Lee to claim second on lap two and began to challenge Ovadal at the front. Contact between the two competitors on lap three resulted in Ovadal spinning in turn two to force the caution. Both drivers were relegated to the rear for the restart handing the lead over to Scheel with Lee in second and Chris Quam third. The leaders raced single file as racing resumed while Dylan Schuyler began making his way into the top five. Point leader Dale Nottestad, as well as Casey Johnson, weren’t far behind as they battled for position in the top ten. Schuyler made his way to third on lap 13 with Nottestad and Johnson following into the top five a few laps later. Another caution on lap 23 erased Scheel’s advantage and closed the leaders back up as they headed into the second half of the feature event. As racing resumed, Schuyler drew even with Lee for second allowing Scheel to slip away again. Schuyler eventually claimed the second spot on lap 35 with Nottestad and Johnson in tow. Nottestad quickly went to work on Schuyler with Scheel continuing to show the way. Nottestad and Johnson got past Schuyler just before the yellow waved again on lap 43. As racing got back underway with seven laps to go, Johnson slipped by Nottestad for second and pulled up behind Scheel on the point. One final caution with five laps remaining set up a shootout to the finish. But Scheel had the field covered despite a serious challenge from Johnson in the closing laps. At the checkers, it was Scheel for the win followed by Johnson, Nottestad, Schuyler and Jason Erickson.

Fort Atkinson’s Mark Deporter charged to the front of the 30 lap Sportsman feature and drove away to claim the win. Adam Bleskan led lap one from the pole with Mike Storkson still to his outside. Bleskan cleared for sole possession on lap two with Tony Ciano creeping up on his low side. Ciano fired past Bleskan on lap three and immediately began to open up a large advantage. Meanwhile, Deporter found himself in second by lap seven as he looked to close on Ciano who was already enjoying a big lead. Deporter chipped away at Ciano’s lead as the duo continued to distance themselves from the rest of the field. On lap 16, Deporter caught Ciano, diving to his inside as they entered turn one. A lap later, Deporter owned the top spot as he drove away to get the win. Ciano finished second with Jason Thoma, Jay Kalbus and Robert Hansberry Jr rounding out the top five.

Madison’s Mike Lambert captured the 20 lap International feature event. Merek Pankow grabbed the early lead from the pole on lap one with Keith Bell right behind in second. Bell found himself in a battle for that second spot on lap seven when Lambert charged alongside. Lambert moved into second on lap eight and began to close on Pankow at the front. Lambert pulled up to Pankow’s rear bumper on lap 13, drawing even and clearing a lap later. Pankow fell back into a great battle for second with Seth Reamer and Chris Chenoweth. But Lambert showed the way over the final laps to see the checkers first for the win. Reamer was second followed by Chenoweth, Pankow and Bell.

Bobby Selsing Jr of Edgerton won the 25 lap Hobby Stock main event. Justin Thomas and Ed Wolff, III battled for control of the lead as the green flew over the field. Thomas cleared for first on lap two as the battle for second raged behind him. Lucas Buckingham used the high groove to charge into second on lap six. Buckingham stayed to the outside , drawing even with Thomas on lap nine and clearing for the top spot a lap later. After a caution on ten, Selsing moved past Thomas to claim second and set his sights on Buckingham out front. Another caution on lap 16 pulled Selsing up to Buckingham’s rear bumper with only nine laps left. On the restart, Selsing drove under Buckingham entering turn three. After a brief battle, Selsing moved out front with Buckingham falling into a battle for second with Cody Buchs. Selsing raced through one final caution with five laps to go to pick up the win. Buckingham held on to finish second followed by AJ Lloyd, Buchs and Dylan Buckingham.

Jefferson’s Chris Gottschalk claimed the 20 lap Road Warrior feature event. Jeff LeFave and Brandon DeLacy battled side by side from the front row as the racing got underway. Bill Reynolds pulled into third on lap three with the battle for the lead still unsettled in front of him. On lap five, Reynolds split the two leaders as he raced up the middle trying to take over the point. Reynolds accomplished the feat on lap six bringing Gottschalk along for second. Gottschalk immediately began to challenge the new leader. On lap eight, Reynolds got loose entering turn one allowing Gottschalk to slip past for first. Reynolds tried to return the favor, but couldn’t make it happen as he got loose once again. Bill Sweeney drove into second and began to search for a way around Gottschalk. But Gottschalk kept Sweeney at bay to see the checkers first for the win. Sweeney was second with Craig Henning, Reynolds and Bryan Gottschalk completing the top five.

Josh Marx of Dousman charged to the front of the 15 lap Bandit feature to claim the win. Steve Dobbratz led early from the outside of row one with Adam Schook up to second. Using the high groove, Marx drew even with Schook on lap four as they battled door to door for second. The duo began to close on Dobbratz as they continued to fight for position. On lap ten, Marx motored into second and drove to the low side of Dobbratz down the backstretch. Marx cleared for the lead exiting turn four and cruised to the checkers to get the win. Trent Rueth finished second followed by Schook, Dobbratz and Nick Schmidt.
