Schuyler Secures Another Win
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, July 2, 2016) Dylan Schuyler of Jefferson charged to the front of the field to claim the 50 lap Late Model feature event presented by Culver’s and Midpoint Eatery and Sports Pub of Johnson Creek. Schuyler’s win on Saturday night marked his second visit to victory lane in the 2016 season at Wisconsin’s Action Track. Meanwhile, point leader Dale Nottestad of Cambridge maintained his streak of top two finishes as well as his strangle hold at the top of the standings.
Kody Hubred and Don Gaserude brought the field to green as they battled door to door for control. The duo raced the opening four laps with nothing settled at the front until Gaserude cleared for the lead at the stripe to begin lap five. Schuyler slid past Hubred for second on lap six and immediately set his sights on Gaserude at the front. A caution slowed the action on lap seven. As racing resumed, Schuyler made his move on Gaserude, driving to the low side of the early leader through turns three and four. After a brief battle, Schuyler took over the top spot on lap 13 and began to stretch his advantage. The field lined up behind the new leader as Schuyler continued to pull away. But his lead was erased by another yellow flag on lap 35 when Luke Westenberg and John Ovadal Jr made contact while fighting for the fifth position. Nottestad found himself in the fifth spot as racing got back underway. He began to pick his way through the top five, trying to get to the front once again. Nottestad picked up fourth on lap 42 and third on lap 44. Nottestad closed in on Gaserude for the second position with just three laps remaining. The point leader made the pass to take over the runner up position, but Schuyler was safely out front on his way to the checkers. Schuyler grabbed the win with Nottestad, Gaserude, Michael Grueneberg and Hubred rounding out the top five.
Robert Hansberry Jr of Beloit scored the win in the 30 lap Sportsman feature by mere inches over Chris Chenoweth. Tim Belz led early from the front row with Chenoweth already up to second. Chenoweth motored past Belz on lap five to take over the top spot. Tony Ciano followed into second as the top two began to break away from the rest of the pack. Meanwhile, Hansberry was working his way through the top five and into third by lap 11. By lap 17, Hansberry was knocking on the door for second place behind Ciano. Hansberry dove under Ciano entering turn one and cleared for second on lap 18. Hansberry closed up behind Chenoweth as the laps began to tick away. Hansberry peeked to the low side of the leader trying to make it stick. With two laps to go, Hansberry got a good run on the bottom of the speedway, drawing even with Chenoweth into turn one. The pair of drivers raced wheel to wheel past the white flag to begin the final circuit. Neither competitor was ready to give in as they flew out of turn four the final time and headed to the checkers. At the stripe, it was Hansberry by only inches to pick up the win with Chenoweth being forced to settle for second. Jay Kalbus came home third followed by Ciano and Scott Hoeft.
Janesville’s James Bell claimed the 20 lap International feature event. Jason Uttech led lap one with Mark English, James Bell and Keith Bell racing three wide behind him for second. James Bell emerged with the spot on lap three as he pulled up behind Uttech looking to lead. On lap five, Bell drove to the low side of Uttech as they raced off of turn two. Bell cleared a lap later as English took a turn under Uttech looking for second. English completed the pass on lap nine with Mike Lambert moving up to third a few laps later. English and Lambert battled for second with Bell staying strong out front. At the checkers, it was Bell for the win with Lambert nipping English at the line to finish second. Neil Higgins was fourth with Jamie Kohn in fifth.
Dustin Ward of Waterloo picked up the win in the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Jamie Tate and Korey Bengsch led the field to green. The pair of drivers raced side by side until Bengsch moved into sole possession of the lead on lap four. Mike Storkson, Lucas Buckingham and Phil Wuesthoff followed Bengsch around Tate on lap five. Bengsch increased his lead over the field while Storkson, Buckingham and Wuesthoff battled for position behind him. Wuesthoff slipped by both drivers on lap 11 to move into second while Ward entered the top five. Ward picked his way to third by lap 14 as he drove to the high side of Wuesthoff looking for second. By lap 17, Ward was up to second and looking to close in on Bengsch. Ward inched closer as the laps wound down. By lap 21, Ward was on the rear bumper of Bengsch. Ward drove under Bengsch as they raced into turn one, drawing even and clearing for the lead on lap 23. A caution waved to slow the pace and set up a green-white-checkered finish. But Ward raced the final two laps unchallenged to grab the win. Bengsch finished second followed by Chuck Egli, Chester Williams and Storkson.
Fort Atkinson’s Chris Gottschalk took top honors in the 15 lap Road Warrior feature event. Rodger Stephenson led lap one with Bryan Gottschalk up to challenge from second. Stephenson held off Bryan Gottschalk with Bill Reynolds moving into second on lap three. Reynolds slipped by Stephenson for the lead bringing Chris Gottschalk along for second. Gottschalk wasted little time, making his move for the lead on lap four. Gottschalk cleared for first on lap six and pulled away to see the checkers first. Reynolds was second with Bill Sweeney, Craig Henning and Bryan Gottschalk completing the top five.
Jeremy Bredeson of Deforest made a last lap pass to net the win in the 15 lap Bandit feature event. McKayla Adams and DJ Hill brought the field to green with Adams taking the early lead on lap one. Ryan Ostenson drove around the high side to move out front on lap three with Chad Olds following into second and Bredeson in third. Olds stayed in the high groove as he tried to draw even with Ostenson. Olds began to fade with less than five laps to go allowing Bredeson to move up to second. As they raced out of turn two on the final lap, Ostenson drifted high allowing Bredeson to charge under the leader. Contact between the two drivers as they entered turn three forced Ostenson to drift high and check up. This allowed Bredeson to fire into the lead and hold it to the stripe for the win. Olds also slipped by for second as well as Nick Schmidt for third. Ostenson finished fourth with Adams rounding out the top five.
