SHAUN SCHEEL CAPTURES SECOND WI STATE TITLE - 44th Wisconsin state championships

Late Models

After a very lengthy weather delay, the final night of the 44th annual Wisconsin State Championships wrapped up in the early morning hours as Jefferson Speedway crowned another batch of title holders. Four divisions of racing over two days ended with Lake Mills driver, Shaun Scheel, capping off his championship season by adding another State Title to his racing resume. The feat marks Scheel’s second Late Model State Title at Wisconsin’s Action Track. Scheel began his racing weekend with a bang, claiming the Glassworks 60 lap main event on Friday night. Scheel proceeded to add two top five finishes on Saturday to claim the overall Late Model crown.

Friday night’s feature began with the Guralski brothers on the front row. Kole Guralski grabbed the early lead with Scheel charging up under Jevin Guralski for second. Scheel moved into the runner up position on lap two with Casey Johnson in tow for third. After an early caution on lap four, Scheel and Kole Guralski led the field back to green with Scheel moving ahead to claim the top spot. Johnson continued to follow Scheel to the front, moving past Guralski for second on lap seven. Two more yellow flags slowed the pace, with Scheel and Johnson leading the pack back to green each time. And each time, Scheel used the high side on the restart to move back into control with Johnson stayed locked on his rear bumper. Johnson continued to fill the rear-view mirror of the leader, as he searched for an opportunity to get to the front. Scheel held him at bay each time as the laps ticked away. The final caution of the race appeared on lap 38, once again pitting Scheel and Johnson side by side for the restart. Scheel regained the lead as racing resumed with Johnson still close by in second. Michael Grueneberg joined the leaders, challenging Johnson for second. Grueneberg drew even with Johnson on lap 43, taking the second spot away a lap later. But Johnson quickly returned to the inside of Grueneberg to take the spot back on lap 47. Johnson closed in on Scheel for one last attempt at the lead, but Scheel held him off to cross under the checkers first. Johnson settled for second followed by Grueneberg, Shane Radtke Jr and Michael Bilderback.

The first of twin Aireserv 60 lap features on Saturday began with Kole Guralski once again on the front row and moving into the lead on lap one. Steven Sauer fell into second with Tim Coley in third. The top three ran single file until Braison Bennett moved alongside Coley on lap 12. After a good battle, Bennett moved ahead of Coley, bringing Jason Erickson along for fourth. While Guralski continued to show the way, Bennett closed in on Sauer, catching him at the halfway point of the race. Contact between the two on lap 31 forced Sauer to check up allowing Bennett and Erickson to slip past. Bennett and Erickson began to slowly cut into the large lead the Guralski was enjoying. His lead began to shrink as the leaders began to encounter heavy lapped traffic with ten laps remaining. Bennett drew in behind Guralski in the closing laps, but was unable to make a serious challenge for the lead. At the finish, it was Guralski for the win with Bennett, Erickson, Michael Grueneberg and Shaun Scheel rounding out the top five.

Seth Reamer and Evan Hassler brought the final 60 lapper to green as Hassler shot into the lead after a brief opening battle. Dale Nottestad moved up to challenge Reamer for second, taking the position for himself on lap five. Shane Radtke Jr followed into third a couple laps later as Nottestad closed in on Hassler at the front. Nottestad began to apply heavy pressure to the leader until a caution on lap 13 slowed the pace. Nottestad and Hassler led the field back to green with Hassler once again claiming the top spot. The pair of drivers ran nose to tail while Casey Johnson made his way into the top three. Johnson pulled up behind Nottestad on lap 30, dipping to the low side as they entered turn one. Johnson completed the pass and set his sights on Hassler at the front. Johnson approached the rear bumper of Hassler on lap 37, launching his bid at the winning pass. Hassler hung tough out front, even as the duo raced through heavy lapped traffic. As the laps began to run out, a caution flew setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Johnson and Hassler paced the field back to green to settle the final feature race. The pair of competitors raced side by side over the final two circuits, with Hassler holding the advantage at the finish. Johnson was second ahead of Nottestad, Radtke and Scheel.

The Midwest Truck Series joined the Saturday portion of the two-day program as they competed in the Nora’s Tavern 30 lap feature event. Collin Reffner and James Lynch led the field to green with Reffner pouncing on the early lead. Aaron Moyer moved past Lynch for second on lap three and closed in on Reffner for the lead. On lap four, contact between the two sent Reffner spinning to force the sole caution of the race. Under the yellow flag, Moyer claimed responsibility for the incident, allowing Reffner to retain his position and sending Moyer to the rear for the restart. Reffner and Lynch once again the pack back to green with Reffner regaining sole possession of the lead on the restart. Brandon Reichenberger moved up alongside Lynch, taking away the second spot on lap six and continuing forward next to Reffner. After a brief battle, Reichenberger took over the lead on lap eight. Lynch followed under Reffner, taking the second position back a lap later. The top two began to break away from the rest of the field while Eugene Gregorich and Jordan DeVoy made their way into the top four. With ten laps to go, Gregorich and DeVoy launched a great side by side battle for third while Reichenberger continued to enjoy a healthy lead. Reichenberg cruised over the final laps, seeing the checkers first to secure the win. Lynch finished second with Gregorich claiming third ahead of Devoy. Robbie Rucks rounded out the top five.

Friday night’s 40 lapper began with Jake Biever grabbing control of the lead on lap one. Biever maintained the lead through two cautions in the first ten laps with Kurt Kleven sticking close by in second. On lap 14, Tytus Helgestad drove under Kleven as they raced down the backstretch. Helgestad cleared for second a lap later, bringing Weber along for third in the process. The leaders lined up singe file as Helgestad began to study the leader, Biever. Weber challenged Helgestad for second on lap 28, but was unable to make a pass. With seven laps to go, Helgestad got a good run on the low side of Biever, drawing even for the lead. The duo raced door to door over the final laps, flying under the white flag with nothing settled. At the checkers, it was Biever with the advantage to score the win with Helgestad a close second. Weber finished third followed by Nick Bruley and Dave Trute.

Kyle Chwala and Andrew Borntreger led Saturday’s first 40 lap feature to green. Chwala claimed the top spot on lap three with Evan Leahy up to second on lap four. Leahy closed in on Chwala, diving under the early leader on lap seven. Leahy quickly took over the point as he set sail out front. Meanwhile, Weber was making his way forward, moving past Borntreger for third on lap 21. Weber caught Chwala on lap 28, moving into second with just over ten laps to go. But Leahy was already well on his way to picking up the win as Weber couldn’t close the gap. Weber was second ahead of Chwala, Matthew Thoma and Helgestad.

Sean Eurick and John Ovadal Jr opened the action in the final Sportsman feature with Ovadal gaining the lead on lap three. While running in second, Eurick fell off the pace on lap ten, handing the position to Chris Jones with Mike Lambert in third. Nick Bruley moved up to challenge Lambert on lap 16, taking the position a lap later. Bruley continued to move forward, catching up with Jones to take the second spot away on lap 20. Helgestad followed into third before a caution on lap 28 slowed the action. Ovadal and Bruley restarted on row one with Bruley moving ahead as racing resumed. Helgestad followed into second and immediately began to pressure the new leader. But Bruley held him at bay over the final laps to secure the win with Helgestad finishing second. Leahy was third ahead of Weber and Ovadal.

Friday night’s 35 feature began with Shane Strothman and Tony Ciano on the front row. After a great opening battle, Ciano took control of the lead on lap six with Strothman back to second. As the top two began to separate themselves from the pack, a caution on lap ten erased their advantage, pitting them back alongside each other for the restart. Ciano returned to the lead as racing resumed while Strothman fell back into a battle for second with Waylon Robinson. Robinson moved ahead of Strothman for second, bringing Jim Tate Jr along for third. The leaders ran single file from there with Ciano claiming the win. Robinson was second followed by Tate, Hunter Milbrath and Charles Vian.

Austin Fowler took the lead of Saturday’s first feature event. Fowler continued to lead following two early cautions with Chester Williams up to second. Williams began creeping up on the low side of Fowler, drawing even on lap seven. Williams cleared for the lead a lap later. Charles Vian followed into second on lap 13 with Jim Tate Jr in tow. Tate quickly moved alongside Vian, taking second away on lap 21. Ciano followed in Tate’s tracks to claim third. But Williams was already well on his way to picking up the feature win as he cruised to the checkers ahead of Tate, Ciano, Vian and Braeden Yelland.

Hunter Milbrath and Steve Dobbratz paced the final 35 lap Hobby Stock feature to green with Milbrath jumping ahead to take the lead. Milbrath maintained his lead through a caution on lap four while Charles Vian made it up to second on lap five. A few laps later, following contact between Jim Tate Jr and Tony Ciano, the racing came to a halt when Ciano made hard contact with the front chute was while rolling his machine over. Ciano and Tate were finished for the evening following the incident. Racing resumed with Milbrath moving back into the lead after restarting alongside Vian. One more caution slowed the race, but Milbrath stayed strong out front, cruising to the checkers to get the win. Chester Williams charged up to second in the waning laps, but ran out of time to catch the leader as he settled for second. Shane Strothman was third followed by Waylon Robinson and Dobbratz.
