Smith Dominates O’Reilly Auto Parts 50
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, September 5, 2015) Kyle Smith of Lake Mills took command of the O’Reilly Auto Parts 50 lap Late Model feature and led every lap en route to picking up the victory. The win is Smith’s first of the 2015 season.
Smith and Bruce Lee paced the field to green as they opened the action battling side by side. Smith held a slight advantage to complete lap one. Smith took control of the point as he exited turn two on the second lap while John Ovadal Jr moved up to battle Lee for second. Ovadal claimed the position on lap four with Noel Ramge trying to follow past Lee as well. Ramge eventually made the pass for third on lap six as the top four began to separate themselves from the rest of the field. Shaun Scheel, Michael Grueneberg, Brandon Pendleton and Jason Erickson fought hard for the fifth spot while the top four continued to break away from the pack. On lap 33, Tim Adams spun in turn four to force the sole caution period of the race and close up the field for the final 17 circuits. As racing resumed, Smith moved out to a comfortable advantage as Ramge began to pressure Ovadal for second. Smith cruised to the checkered flag from there to claim his first feature win of the season. Ovadal hung on for second followed by Ramge, Pendleton and Scheel.
Fort Atkinson’s Mark Deporter picked up his first feature win of 2015 by claiming the 30 lap Sportsman main event. The race began with a caution on lap one when Chris Chenoweth hit the turn three wall on the opening lap. Racing was delayed once again on lap two when pole sitter Josh Madell spun entering turn one. As racing resumed, it was Brian Mayer showing the way followed by Tim Coley in second and Deporter in third. On lap four, Coley made his move on Mayer, driving under the early leader exiting turn four. Coley cleared for the lead a lap later with Deporter trying to follow under Mayer. But Mayer fought back on the outside, briefly drawing even with Coley on lap six. Coley reclaimed sole possession of the top spot on lap seven with Deporter in his tracks for second. On lap nine, Deporter drove to the outside of Coley as they battled for the lead with Jay Kalbus up to third. After fighting for several laps, Deporter moved out front on lap 15 with Coley dropping to second. A caution on lap 19 slowed the pace, but once racing restarted, Deporter moved out to a healthy advantage with Kalbus working over Coley for second. Kalbus claimed the spot for himself on lap 21, but Deporter was well on his way to the checkers to pick up the win. Kalbus finished second with Tony Ciano, Coley and Mike Rahn rounding out the top five.
Seth Reamer of Beaver Dam solidified his lead in the International division point standings by winning the 20 lap feature event. Seth Green and Mat Cooper brought the field to green as they battled side by side for control. On lap three, Merek Pankow joined the fight for first, driving three wide to third. A lap later, Green moved past Cooper with Pankow quickly joining him at the front. Pankow cleared for the top spot with Reamer in his tracks for second. Reamer wasted little time behind Pankow, driving under him as they raced into turn one on lap six. After a brief side by side battle, Reamer took control of the point as he and Pankow broke away from the rest of the pack. But a caution on lap 14 erased their advantage and placed them door to door for the restart. Reamer reclaimed the lead as racing resumed while Neil Higgins moved up to challenge Pankow for second. At the checkers, it was Reamer for the win with Higgins grabbing second over Pankow. Fourth went to Mike Lambert with Mark English completing the top five.
Whitewater’s Lucas Buckingham captured the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Korey Bengsch and Jeff LeFave opened the action on the front row with neither giving up much ground on lap one. Lucas Buckingham joined the battle for the lead on lap three as he tried to go three wide with Bengsch and LeFave. A lap later, Buckingham drove his mount right up the middle of the two leaders. Bengsch briefly moved into sole possession of the top spot as Boyd Eichelkraut moved up to battle Buckingham and LeFave for second. On lap eight, Buckingham slid up next to Bengsch, clearing for the lead. Bengsch dropped back into a fight for second with Eichelkraut and Dylan Buckingham for second. Dylan Buckingham took over the second position on lap 13 with Cody Buchs in tow for third. Dustin Ward followed Buchs into fourth on lap 14 as Buchs went to work on Dylan Buckingham for second. Buchs took the position away on lap 17 with Ward in tow for third. Ward quickly drove to the high side of Buchs to move into second with AJ Lloyd right behind him. With five laps to go, Ward charged alongside Lucas Buckingham looking to lead. Ward cleared a lap later with Lloyd still on his bumper for second. On lap 22, Ward drifted very high on the exit of turn four and begun to spin as he hit the front stretch. Ward collected Lloyd who tried to slip past on the low side and the two made hard contact with the front chute wall to force the caution. Both drivers retired for the evening handing the lead back to Lucas Buckingham with Cody Buchs in second and Dylan Buckingham in third. Lucas Buckingham hung on over the final three laps to see the checkers first followed by Cody Buchs, Dylan Buckingham, Wayne Buchs and Eichelkraut.
Chris Gottschalk of Jefferson laid claim to the 15 lap Road Warrior feature event. After a melee on lap one shortened the field, Bill Sweeney and Bill Reynolds brought the field to green with Reynolds taking the initial lead on lap one. Sweeney dropped back into a three way battle for second between Bryan Gottschalk and Chris Gottschalk. The Gottschalk brothers emerged wheel to wheel for second with Chris taking the position and drawing even with Reynolds for the lead on lap three. Chris Gottschalk got past Reynolds on lap four and immediately began to open up a large lead. The leaders raced the remainder of the event without much challenge from the competitor behind them. At the checkers, it was Chris Gottschalk for the win followed by Reynolds, Kenny Storkson, Bryan Gottschalk and Lucas Stevenson.
Madison’s Jamie Kohn made the late race pass to net the win in the 20 lap Bandit main event. After an early caution on lap one, Bill Kohn took the lead with Dustin Yanke and Nick Schmidt right behind him. Yanke and Schmidt drove under Kohn on lap two as they both emerged a lap later fighting for first. Schmidt cleared for control of the point on lap four while Adam Schook and Chad Olds slipped past Yanke in a fight for second. Schook took over the runner up position on lap seven with Jamie Kohn up to battle Olds for third. Kohn got past Olds on lap seven and quickly drew even with Schook for second. Kohn cleared for second at the half way point of the race as he began to run down Schmidt on the point. Lap after lap Kohn closed in on the leader, finally catching him with five laps to go. Kohn took a shot on the low side, but couldn’t make it work on lap 15. A lap later, Kohn tried to bottom again, this time drawing even with Schmidt. Kohn inched forward, holding the advantage as they crossed under the white flag. At the checkers, it was Kohn for the win followed by Schmidt, Schook, Olds and Brody Chilvers.
