Smith Seizes B&M Electric 50
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, May 17, 2014) Kyle Smith of Lake Mills captured his second career Late Model feature victory on Saturday night at Jefferson Speedway. Smith’s win in the B&M Electric 50 lap feature marks the fourth different winner in as many weeks at Wisconsin’s Action Track.
Smith and Tim Sargent brought the field of cars to green as Sargent rifled into the lead entering turn one on the opening circuit. Smith dropped in line behind him with Stephen Scheel in third. Sargent and Smith began to break away from the pack slightly as Brandon Pendleton battled Scheel for the third spot. Scheel reclaimed third on lap 20 with Dylan Schuyler up to fourth. A caution on lap 24 slowed the field and closed them back up with Sargent still showing the way in front of Smith, Scheel and Schuyler. Once racing resumed, Schuyler went to work for the third position. He accomplished that feat on lap 28 as the top three lined up single file and started to pull away from the rest of the pack. On lap 36, Smith began to apply heavy pressure to Sargent who had led every lap thus far. As they raced into turn three on lap 38, they touched slightly resulting in Sargent getting a little loose. Smith pounced on the opening as he drew even on the inside of Sargent. Smith cleared for the top spot a lap later as Schuyler tried to follow under Sargent. Schuyler eventually completed the pass with two laps remaining, but Smith stayed strong out front to see the checkers first. Schuyler finished second followed by Sargent, Dale Nottestad and Scheel.
Stoughton’s Jim Taylor survived the 30 lap Sportsman main event to pick up his first win of the 2014 season. Starting alongside Russ Nicholson on the front row, Taylor grabbed control of the point on lap one with Tony Ciano up to second and Seth Lootans in third. The top three began to slip away from the rest of the field while Robert Hansberry Jr and Jason Thoma made their way toward the front. By lap 11, Hansberry was up to fourth with Thoma in tow for fifth. A caution on lap 16 erased the large lead the top three were enjoying. As racing resumed, Ciano went to work on the leader. Ciano drew even on the low side of Taylor as they raced for the top spot. Hansberry made it to third behind the duo of Ciano and Taylor just before the second and final caution on lap 24. Racing resumed with six laps to go and this time Ciano was trying to hang on to second with Hansberry to his outside. Taylor showed the way over the final laps to pick up the win with Hansberry overtaking Ciano for second. Mark Deporter was fourth with Jay Kalbus in fifth.
James Bell of Janesville claimed the win in the 20 lap International feature event. Joe Cross took the initial lead on lap one from the outside of row one. Keith Bell got by Josh Lenz for second on lap two as James Bell began to shadow the top three. James Bell moved into the third position on lap seven just before the first of two cautions waved to slow the action. On the restart, James Bell slipped past his father, Keith, for second and set his sights on Cross at the front. James Bell drove under Cross at the half way point of the feature, clearing for the lead a lap later with Seth Reamer following into second. After the second caution on lap 14, Reamer began to challenge Bell for the top spot while Chris Chenoweth battled John Handeland for third behind them. Bell maintained control of the lead despite heavy pressure from Reamer as he crossed the stripe first to claim the win. Reamer was second with Chenoweth, Handeland and Mike Lambert rounding out the top five.
Beaver Dam’s Phil Wuesthoff got to the front early and stayed there to win the 20 lap Hobby Stock main event. Lap one saw Kevin Henderson spin in front of the field from his front row starting spot as the yellow slowed the racing before it even got started. After the opening lap yellow, Lucas Buckingham took the early lead with Wuesthoff already up to second. On lap three, Wuesthoff drove under Buckingham, clearing through turns three and four. Another caution waved on lap four when Dustin Ward experienced mechanical difficulties as he was forced to retire for the evening. Anthony Lloyd and Bobby Selsing Jr made their way into the top four once racing resumed as the leaders lined up single file. The third and final caution waved on lap 11 set up a nine lap shootout to the finish. As racing resumed, the fight for second ensued as Lloyd, Buckingham and Selsing raced three wide down the backstretch. Selsing emerged with the position on lap 14 as he set his sights on Wuesthoff. But the battle for second allowed Wuesthoff to open up a large advantage and Selsing was unable to close in as Wuesthoff cruised to the checkers for the win. Selsing was second followed by Lloyd, Buckingham and Scott Riemer.
Jefferson’s Chris Gottschalk picked up this three consecutive feature win in as many weeks as he captured the 20 lap Road Warrior main event. Matthew Melchiori and Jordan Lamb led the field to green with Lamb taking the early lead on lap one. After an early caution lap tow, Melchiori tried to come back on Lamb, but Lamb stayed out front as Melchiori slipped back into the field. Scott Hoeft slid up to second with Gottschalk following into third on lap seven. Hoeft drove up alongside Lamb at the front, clearing a lap later with Gottschalk in his tracks. Gottschalk wasted little time as the now drove to the low side of the new leader. The duo raced side by side until Gottschalk moved into the top spot on lap 10. Bill Sweeney moved up to second with five laps to go, but Gottschalk had the field covered on his way to the win. Sweeney was second followed by Kenny Storkson, Chad Olds and Hoeft.
Josh Marx of Dousman made a late race pass to seal the win in the 15 lap Bandit feature event. Sueter Bennett took the initial lead entering turn one. Tyler Deporter charged alongside Bennett, clearing for the top spot to complete the opening lap. Nick Schmidt didn’t let Deporter lead for long as he drove by for the position on lap three bringing Dave Schmidt along for second. On lap five, Marx drove to the high side of Dave Schmidt. After a brief battle, Marx claimed the spot and continued forward looking to lead. With three laps to go, Marx again took to the high side as he drew even with Nick Schmidt. A lap later, Marx was in sole possession of the point on his way to the checkers for the win. Trent Rueth managed to claim second in the closing laps from Nick Schmidt with Brandon DeLacy and Dustin Yanke rounding out the top five.
