Spring Sizzler (Finally)!

By Larry & Jeanne Starr

May 15, 2004; Jefferson, Wis. – A large crowd was on hand to watch over 150 cars do battle in a huge program at Jefferson Speedway. They were treated to over 650 laps of racing, in 22 races.

Dan Chesmore of Janesville claimed top honors in the 65 lap “Spring Sizzler Finale,” originally scheduled April 24. Starting from the outside of the front row, Chesmore claimed the early lead, guiding the way all the way to the checkers. Chesmore took the checkered flag first, followed by Randy Breunig, John Ovadal Jr., Chad “Squirt” Stevens and Ken Olson.

In the 2nd, 35 lap, Late Model feature of the night, Scott Nottestad of Stoughton claimed the winning spot. Starting from the outside of the front row, Nottestad lost the battle for the early lead to Ken Olson. Working his way back Nottestad claimed the top spot on lap 10 and never looked back, guiding the field to the checkered flag. At the stripe it was Nottestad for the win, followed by Randy Breunig, Olson, Jason Erickson and John Ovadal Jr.

In International action Scott Hoeft of Watertown notched the win, in the 25 lap “Spring Sizzler” main event. Starting from the Outside of row 4, Hoeft headed toward the front as Alan Petrie pulled to the early lead. Hoeft closed with Petrie on lap 4, claiming the point on lap 5. As Hoeft motored to the front, B.J. Sparkman closed with Petrie, making his bid for 2nd. Sparkman claimed 2nd on lap 10, closing with Hoeft. At the stripe it was Hoeft for the win, followed by Sparkman, Alan Petrie, Tim Petrie and Steve Allman.

Sparkman, Steve Allman, Alan Petrie and Tim Petrie.

In the Sportsman division, Bret Schmidt of Watertown notched the win, in the 40 lap “Spring Sizzler” feature. Starting from the inside of row 5, Schmidt set his sites on the front, as Ryan Goldade grabbed the early lead. Goldade guided the way for 33 laps, as Schmidt battled his way through traffic, behind several of the speedway’s top drivers. Schmidt motored under Dave Oswald, for 3rd on lap 23. Defending track champion Trent Erdman moved under Goldade, for the top spot, on lap 34, only to surrender the spot to Schmidt on lap 35. As they flew past the checkered, it was Schmidt for the win, followed by Erdman, Mark Deporter, Oswald and Goldade.

Mark Deporter of Fort Atkinson claimed top honors in the 2nd, 30 lap, Sportsman feature. Starting from the inside of row 5, Deporter started his drive to the checkers, as Noel Ramge raced to the early lead. Deporter made his way past Dave Oswald, for 4th, on lap 8 and Jason Thoma, for 3rd, on lap 12. Claiming 2nd, from Tom Reents on lap 14, Deporter closed in on Ramge. Moving to the inside of Ramge, on lap 13, Deporter made the winning pass on lap 18. Hobby stock action saw Terry Wangsness of Delavan claim the top finishing spot, in the “Spring Sizzler” 25 lap main event. Starting from the outside of row 5, Wangsness began his trek to the front, as Rick Kehoe drove to the early lead. Wangsness was running 4th, when the only caution of the race came, for a blown engine on lap 15. On the restart Wangsness moved under Ken Au and Lincoln Keeser, claiming the 2nd spot on lap 18. Kehoe bobbled, coming out of turn 2 on lap 19, providing the only opening that Wangsness needed to charge to the point. At the stripe it was Wangsness, followed by Kehoe, Bret Carson, Eaan Carson and Keeser.

Wangsness returned to claim the 2nd, 20 lap, main event for the Hobby Stocks. Starting from the outside of row 5, Wangsness started his charge to the point, as Jim Robinson jumped to the early lead. Robinson led the way for 8 laps, as Wangsness wound his way through traffic. Jim Tate made his way under Robinson, claiming the top spot on lap 9. Tate surrendered the point to Ken Au on lap 17, with Wangsness moving into the 2nd spot on lap 18. Wangsness relieved Au at the point, on their way to the checkered flag. At the finish it was Wangsness for the win, followed by Au, Tate, Robinson and Eaan Carson.
In Bandit action, Bill Sweeney of Janesville motored from a 10th place start to claim top honors in the 20 lap “Spring Sizzler” feature. At the green flag it was Kyle Stark claiming the point. Stark led the first 4 laps, before passing the point to Troy Yohn. Sweeney closed with Yohn on lap 13, driving hard to the inside.
