Zielski Captures Kemmeter’s Corners 50

By Andrew Schaller

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, July 31, 2010) Ryan Zielski of Oconomowoc powered to the front of the field on Saturday night en route to victory at Jefferson Speedway. Starting from the outside of row four, Zielski moved quickly into the top five and eventually to the point to get his first feature win of 2010.

Starting outside Scott Lindsay, Roger Behlke claimed the early lead on lap one with Jerry Eckhardt right behind in second. The outside lane continued to move forward with Chris Quam up to third and Zielski already riding in fourth. Caution waved on lap seven when Jason Schuler and Kyle Jarlsberg made hard contact with the turn three wall. As racing resumed, Zielski dove under Quam to steal away the third spot. Zielski charged under Eckhardt, looking to grab second as Bob Kahler pressured Quam for fourth. Zielski claimed the runner up position for himself on lap 17 as he set his sights on Behlke at the front. On lap 22, Zielski looked to the low side of Behlke, but another caution slowed his efforts on lap 27. When the green waved once again, Zielski went right back to work on the leader. Behlke tried to hold Zielski at bay, but he was too strong, clearing for the top spot on lap 28. The third of four caution periods appeared on lap 33 when Kahler and Steve Dobbratz made contact sending Dobbratz around and removing both drivers from the top five. Point leader Casey Johnson inherited the fifth position for the restart and immediately began to pick off cars on his way to the second position. Johnson found himself in second on lap 41 with Zielski still showing the way out front. As the laps ticked away, Zielski maintained his advantage on his way to the checkers for the win. Johnson finished second followed by Behlke, Eckhardt and Doug Hahn.

Shaun Scheel of Lake Mills was awarded the 30 lap Sportsman main event following post race inspection. Terry Wangsness and Brady Lilly paced the field to green with Lilly taking the early lead. Wangsness fell in line behind Lilly with Mike Acheson in third. After a caution on lap five, Jason Dunn dove under Acheson, claiming third on lap eight and pulling even with Wangsness for second. Mark Deporter followed Dunn with Kalbus entering the top five right behind them. Lilly began to stretch his lead as Dunn and Wangsness fought over the second position until caution on lap 18 caused by contact between Dunn, Wangsness and point leader Scott Riedner. All three were forced to the rear for the restart handing second to Kalbus. As the green returned, Kalbus fired under Lilly looking to lead. The two battled side by side until the final caution slowed the field on lap 24. Kalbus restarted as the leader with Lilly directly behind in second. As racing resumed, Kalbus remained the leader while Lilly tried to hold off Shaun Scheel for second. Scheel managed to get around Lilly in the closing laps. At the line, it was Kalbus out front with Scheel, Lilly, James Helmer and Riedner rounding out the top five. Following post race inspection, Kalbus was forced to vacate his finish, handing the win to Scheel.

Kyle Smith of Lake Mills took top honors in the 20 lap International feature event. Travis Schneeberg took control on lap one with Neil Higgins following into second. Kyle and Ashley Smith battled their way to third and fourth by lap three as Kyle went to work on Higgins for the second spot. Kyle Smith cleared Higgins on lap four and charged up alongside Schneeberg. The duo battled door to door until Smith cleared on lap seven. Smith continued to stretch his lead as the laps wound down and his way to the stripe for the win. Schneeberg was second followed by Kyle Stark, Ashley Smith and Mark English.

Watertown’s Jim Tate continued his hot streak as of late by winning the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Lucas Buckingham and Ed Klug led the field to green with Klug taking the initial lead on lap one. Klug got loose in turns one and two on the second circuit as the field bunched up behind him. Buckingham fired into the lead with Jimmy Robinson in tow for second. Robinson quickly moved to the low side of Buckingham and took over the top spot just before caution waved on lap four. On the restart, Tate motored to the inside of Buckingham and moved into second with Zach Schmidt in his tracks for third. Tate moved up to challenge Robinson, taking possession of the lead on lap ten. Schmidt followed Tate into second as the final caution waved on lap 12. On the restart, Schmidt began to pressure Tate for the point, pulling even on lap 13. But Tate returned to sole possession of the lead on lap 18 as he drove off to get the win. Schmidt was second followed by Kyle Stark, Dustin Ward and Steven Sauer.

Bill Reynolds of Watertown claimed yet another feature win in the 10 lap Road Warrior main event. Bill Sweeney was the early leader with Brett Carson running in the second spot. Reynolds found his way to third on lap three while Sweeney opened up a large lead. After a brief battle with Carson, Reynolds took over second on lap five and began to cut into Sweeney’s lead. Reynolds caught the leader with only two laps remaining as he dove to the low side of Sweeney. The pair of drivers flew past the white flag side by side. Reynolds cleared for the lead down the backstretch on the final lap to get the win with Sweeney, Carson, Roger Stephenson and Eric Connell rounding out the top five.

Stan Schave of Lake Mills claimed his first career feature win by capturing the 20 lap Bandit main event. Schave and Cory Jensen paced the field to green as Jensen grabbed the early lead. Schave stayed strong on the outside as he battled Michelle Heimann for second. On lap eight, Schave got a good run to claim second and dive under Jensen in turn two. Schave cleared for the point on lap ten with Dave Schmidt in tow for second. Schave held off Schmidt to cross under the checkers first for the win. Schmidt was second followed by Will Rece, Phil Wuesthoff and Kameron Lee.
