Chris Quam Conquers Feature

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, June 08, 2013) Stoughton’s Chris Quam grabbed control of the Brown’s Heating and Air Conditioning 50 lap Late Model main event and stayed there through the checkered flag to pick up the victory. The win marks Quam’s first feature win since the 2010 season at Jefferson Speedway.

Brandon Pendleton and Tyler Peterson led the field to green with Peterson holding the advantage on lap one. Peterson cleared for sole possession of the top spot on lap two as Quam tried to follow around the outside of Pendleton. Quam completed the pass for second on lap three bringing Roger Behlke along for third. Quam began to apply heavy pressure to Peterson on the point, taking a look on the low side of the leader on lap eight. Peterson reclaimed the lead for himself on lap 11, but Quam stayed on his rear bumper looking for an opening. The top five lined up single file as they broke away from the rest of the pack. On lap 19, Quam took a second look under Peterson, this time drawing even as they battled for the lead. Quam took control of the top spot on lap 22 while Ryan Goldade began to work over Behlke for third. Goldade grabbed the third position just before a caution slowed the field on lap 27. Quam restarted as the leader with Peterson in second and Goldade riding in third. As racing resumed, Goldade and Peterson made contact entering turn one resulting in Peterson spinning for the second and final caution. As the field got back to racing, Quam continued to show the way with Behlke now in second and Dylan Schuyler up to third. Quam was never seriously challenged as the laps wound down and he cruised to the checkers for the win. Behlke was second followed by Schuyler, Pendleton and Ty James.

Jim Tate Jr of Deforest returned to his winning ways by laying claim to his fifth Sportsman feature victory of the season. Jay Kalbus led early from the front row with Tate already into the top five by lap three. Tate drove three wide, clearing for third on lap four and driving up alongside Jason Kubicz for second. A lap later, Tate was in the runner up spot and looking to get out front. Tate pulled up behind Kalbus as he looked to the low side of the early leader on lap six. Tate cleared a lap later and looked to open up a healthy lead. But two cautions slowed his efforts just before the midway point of the race. Once racing resumed, Tate charged out to a commanding lead while Jason Thoma and Steven Sauer battled for second. At the checkers, it was Tate for the win with Thoma nipping Sauer at the line for second. Mark Deporter and Seth Lootans rounded out the top five.

Chris Chenoweth of Watertown captured the 20 lap International main event. Keith Bell and Josh Kubicz brought the field to green with Kubicz taking the lead on lap two. Bell dropped back into a battle for second with Neil Higgins and Casey Strese. On lap three, contact between Higgins and Bell caused the sole caution of the race and relegated both to the rear. Kubicz restarted as the leader with Strese in second and Chenoweth up to third. As racing resumed, Strese charged under Kubicz to claim the point with Chenoweth in tow for second. On lap six, Chenoweth took his shot at the lead, pulling alongside Strese through turns three and four. After a good side by side battle, Chenoweth moved out front alone on lap ten. Mike Lambert moved up to battle Strese for second while Chenoweth opened up a big lead. Chenoweth saw the checkers first to get the win. Lambert got by Strese for second with Kubicz in fourth and Seth Reamer fifth.

Another exciting Hobby Stock feature ended with Bobby Selsing Jr making a last lap pass to seal the win in the 25 lap event. Jim Wolf led lap one from the pole with Cody Buchs up to second and Dustin Ward in third. Ward drove by Buchs on lap three and continued forward next to Wolf exiting turn four. Ward was clear for the lead entering turn one on the next circuit with Buchs trying to follow into second. Buchs made the pass on lap six while the battle for third raged behind him. On lap 11, Selsing claimed the third spot as he looked to continue forward. Selsing drove to the outside of Buchs on lap 16 while Ward continued to show the way. Selsing cleared for second on lap 19 with James Helmer in tow for third. Selsing continued to close on Ward as the laps ticked away. As Ward exited turn four to see the white flag fly, Selsing charged under him using a lapped car as an aide. Selsing flew into turn one with the lead and held off Ward on the final lap to cross the stripe first for the win. Ward was second followed by Helmer, Tony Ciano and Buchs.

Travis Schneeberg of Cottage Grove nipped Chad Olds at the line to pick up the victory in the 20 lap Road Warrior feature event. Jared Larson and Kenny Storkson led the field to green with Larson leading early on and Olds moving into second. Olds drew even with Larson on lap two, clearing for the lead a lap later and brining Schneeberg along for second. Olds and Schneeberg pulled away from the rest of the pack as Schneeberg looked for a way to make the winning pass. On lap 15, Schneeberg began creeping up on the low side of Olds while Olds tried to hold him off. The duo raced wheel to wheel over the final three laps with Schneeberg holding the slight advantage at the checkers to get the win. Olds settled for second followed by Bill Sweeney, Chris Gottschalk and Rob Lange.

Dave Schmidt of Cudahy got to the front of the 20 lap Bandit feature event and drove away to get the win. Tyler Deporter led lap one from the pole with Schmidt and Josh Rusch battling for second. Schmidt claimed the runner up spot on lap three and immediately drove to the outside of Deporter looking to lead. After a brief battle, Schmidt claimed the point and started to open up a large lead. Keith Erickson got to second on lap ten with Josh Marx in his tracks for third. Marx slipped by Erickson on lap 12, but Schmidt was already well on his way to seeing the checkers first for the win. Marx finished second followed by Nick Schmidt, Derek Dixon and Erickson.

Next Saturday, June 15, is a full program in all division sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm. Then, on June 22, the super late models return to Wisconsin’s Action Track as the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series invades Jefferson Speedway along with the MidAmerican Stock Car Series.
