Johnson Flexes Muscle To Win Again
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, May 28, 2016) Edgerton’s Casey Johnson charged his way to the front of the field on Saturday night to claim the Newville Auto Salvage 50 lap Late Model feature. The feat made it back to back visits to victory lane for the defending and three time track champion at Wisconsin’s Action Track.
Bruce Lee and Stephen Scheel paced the pack to the drop of the green flag with neither giving an inch to the other on the opening lap while Kyle Smith watched from third. Scheel took control of the point as they completed the second circuit while Michael Grueneberg moved up to challenge Smith for third. On lap ten, Grueneberg got shuffled back slightly as John Ovadal Jr took his place under Smith. Ovadal moved into the third spot on lap 15 with Johnson in his tracks for fourth. Johnson quickly made his move to the inside of Ovadal on lap 19, clearing for third on lap 21. Johnson began reeling in the top two competitors as they approached the halfway point of the race. By lap 26, Johnson was peeking to the low side of Lee for second with Scheel continuing to show the way. Johnson stole the second position for himself on lap 27 and pulled up behind Scheel, just as he did one week ago. Johnson drew even with Scheel on lap 29, clearing for the top spot a lap later. The sole caution of the race flew on lap 36 when Kody Hubred spun exiting turn four. As racing resumed, Dale Nottestad began to pick his way through the top five, finding his way to second by lap 43. But Johnson was well out front enjoying his lead as he cruised to the checkers for the win. Nottestad finished second followed by Scheel, Lee and Grueneberg.
Watertown’s Jay Kalbus led each lap of the 30 lap Sportsman feature to capture the win. Dan Schmidt and Kalbus brought the field to green with Kalbus leading lap one. Tony Ciano followed past Schmidt into second as the top two drivers began to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Ciano began to pressure Kalbus as the front as Mark Deporter and Bobby Selsing moved into third and fourth respectively. Ciano spent the majority of the race searching for the best way past the leader. Several times, Ciano would peek to the low side of Kalbus through turns three and four only to have the door slammed shut as they raced into turn one. With two laps remaining, Ciano took one last shot at the race long leader. The duo made contact several times over the final laps, but Kalbus remained in control to cross the stripe first for the win. Ciano settled for second with Deporter, Selsing and Jason Thoma rounding out the top five.
Kyle Stark of Waterloo claimed victory in the 20 lap International feature event. Jason Uttech led lap one from the pole with Mike Lambert up to challenge from second on lap two. While Uttech and Lambert fought for position, Stark, Neil Higgins and Seth Reamer sliced their way into the top five. Uttech remained out front as Higgins drew even with Lambert for second on lap seven. Higgins took the spot on lap nine as he slid up next to Uttech on the same circuit. Higgins took control of the top spot with Stark in tow for second. One lap later, Stark moved under Higgins looking to get by the new leader. Stark completed the pass on lap 12 and immediately began to open up a healthy advantage. Reamer moved up to fight with Higgins for second with Reamer taking the position for himself on lap 17. But Stark was already on his way to the checkers to pick up the win. Reamer finished second followed by Higgins, Uttech and Lambert.
Bill Sweeney of Aztalan won the 15 lap Road Warrior feature event. David Pautsch Jr led lap one with Bill Reynolds and Sweeney in hot pursuit. On lap two, Reynolds and Sweeney split Pautsch as they moved out into a side by side battle for the lead. Sweeney emerged with the point on lap three as Reynolds settled into second with Kenny Storkson up to third. Sweeney stayed strong out front for the remainder of the race while Reynolds tried to hold off Storkson for second. At the checkers, it was Sweeney for the win with Reynolds holding off Storkson for second. Chris Gottschalk was fourth with Craig Henning in fifth.
Chad Olds of Whitewater came home victorious in the 15 lap Bandit feature event. Michelle Heimann led early from the front row with Dillon Scott up to second. Olds used the high groove to charge up to third on lap three. Olds continued forward, driving to the outside of Scott looking for second. On lap nine, Scott went to the low side of Heimann with Olds going high in a three way battle for the lead. Scott and Olds emerged side by side with Olds taking over the top spot a lap later. Olds drove to the checkers from there to score the win with Ryan Ostenson moving up to second at the finish. Tyler Deporter was third followed by Scott and Heimann.
The Legends cars made their first visit to Jefferson Speedway in 2016 with Aaron Moyer of Allenton taking top honors in the 15 lap feature. Blaise Watters led lap one from the outside of the front row with Riley Stenjem and Moyer up to second and third. Stenjem drove around Watters on lap three bringing Moyer with him. Moyer wasted no time as he began to challenge the new leader on lap four. Moyer shot past Stenjem on lap five with Max McNamara in his tracks for second. Moyer ran unchallenged for the remainder of the race to see the checkers first for the win. McNamara was second followed by Vince Bartolotta, Jacob Nottestad and Stenjem.
Robbie Rucks for Deerfield took the win in the 8 lap feature as the Bandoleros also returned to action at Jefferson Speedway. Karter Stark led lap one. On lap four, Stark spun in turn one to force a caution. Rucks claimed the point on the restart with Stark back to second. Stark spun again on lap five handing Rucks a large lead which he never relinquished. At the checkers, it was Rucks for the convincing win with Stark finishing second.
Next Saturday, June 4, is a full racing program in all six divisions with time trials starting at 5pm and the first race at 7pm sharp. Jefferson Speedway is located halfway between Jefferson and Cambridge on Hwy 18. Please visit www.jeffersonspeedway.com for more information.
