Quam Conquers Newville Auto Salvage 50

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, May 03, 2014) Starting from the outside of the front row, Stoughton’s Chris Quam survived several challenges for the top spot en route to earning the victory in the Newville Auto Salvage 50 lap Late Model feature on Saturday night.

Quam grabbed control of the lead on lap one with fellow front row starter Jerry Eckhardt falling in line for second and Brandon Pendleton up to third. Two early cautions passed with Quam continuing to show the way and Eckhardt right behind. Stephen Scheel and Dylan Schuyler joined the leaders in the top five following the second caution on lap seven. The leaders ran nose to tail until the yellow waved once again on lap 18. Following the restart, the action at the front began to intensify as Eckhardt tried to hold off Pendleton for second. On lap 23, the duo made contact entering turn one resulting in Eckhardt going around to force another caution. Both drivers were forced to the rear of the field for the restart handing second to Schuyler with Zack Riddle up to third. As racing resumed, Schuyler launched his bid to overtake Quam for the top spot. Schuyler got a good run on the low side of the leader on lap 26. The pair of drivers raced side by side until the field was slowed again by the yellow flag. As the green flag returned, Dale Nottestad joined the top three while Schuyler went back to work on Quam. Quam held Schuyler at bay until lap 44 when Schuyler got a good run once again under the leader. This time Schuyler inched ahead until the yellow made another appearance with five laps to go. Quam was scored the leader with Schuyler still second and Nottestad riding in third. Schuyler charged under Quam one more time as the yellow was lifted with just five laps remaining. But a final caution with two laps to go set up a green/white/checkered finish with Quam trying to hang on and secure the win. Schuyler had his hands full with Nottestad as the racing resumed for the final time allowing Quam to slip away and pick up the hard fought victory. Schuyler finished second followed by Nottestad, Riddle and Tory Bagley.

In Sportsman action, it was Jason Thoma of Jefferson charging to the front and away with the win in the 20 lap feature event. Tim Coley and Tony Ciano brought the field to green with Coley owning the slight advantage to lead lap one. Coley cleared on lap two as Thoma moved up to challenge Ciano for second. Thoma claimed the runner up position on lap and set his sights on the early leader. On lap five, Thoma drove to the outside of Coley looking to steal the top spot. Thoma drew even, clearing for the lead a lap later and immediately beginning to open up a healthy advantage. Mark Deporter made his way to second on lap 13, but Thoma was already well out in front of the field. Thoma cruised to the checkers to get the win with Deporter in second and Coley, Robert Hansberry and Ciano completing the top five.

Waupun’s Seth Reamer made a late race pass to pick up the win in the 20 lap International main event. Joe Cross and Peter Shelley made up row one at the start. Cross pulled his mount to the infield as they raced down the backstretch on lap one handing the lead to Shelley. An early caution on lap two lined the field up single file with Shelley on the point followed by Dan Birkett and John Handeland. On the restart, Handeland made his move for the second spot as he pulled alongside Birkett. A lap later, Handeland slid up next to the leader, Shelley. Handeland grabbed control of the lead on lap seven as Reamer followed into second. Birkett and Neil Higgins tangled on lap ten to bring out caution number two. Reamer began to challenge Handeland on the restart but Handeland held him off until the third and final caution waved on lap 12. After the cleanup was finished and racing resumed, Reamer began to work over Handeland once again for the lead. Reamer got a good run on lap 16 as he drew even with Handeland. Reamer motored past to claim the lead on lap 17. James Bell followed Reamer past Handeland to grab second, but Reamer stayed out front to see the checkers first and get the win. Bell was second followed by Handeland, Shelley and Higgins.

Phil Wuesthoff of Beaver Dam claimed his first career Hobby Stock feature by winning the 20 lap affair. Lucas Buckingham led early from the outside of row one with Jeff LeFave up to second and Anthony Lloyd in third. Wuesthoff got past Lloyd and moved alongside LeFave on lap six. Wuesthoff cleared a lap later bringing Dustin Ward along for third. Wuesthoff continued to charge forward as he drew even with Buckingham on lap eight. A lap later, Wuesthoff was out front by himself with Ward still in his tracks for second. Ward began searching for a way around the new leader, but Wuesthoff kept fighting off his advances. With one lap to go, Ward tried the high side to get by the leader, but to no avail as Wuesthoff hung on to cross the stripe first for the win. Ward settled for second followed by Bobby Selsing Jr, Buckingham and LeFave.

Jefferson’s Chris Gottschalk picked up the win in the 20 lap Road Warrior feature event. Kenny Storkson led lap one from the front row with Scotty Hoeft up to second on lap two. Hoeft drove under Storkson on lap three while Bill Sweeney and Gottschalk battle for third behind them. Hoeft took the lead on lap five with Gottschalk in tow for second. Gottschalk wasted little time as he began to apply pressure to the new leader on lap eight. Gottschalk drew even as the pair raced wheel to wheel for the top spot. Sweeney moved up to third as he watched the leader duke it out for the lead. Gottschalk cleared for sole possession of the lead with five laps to go while Hoeft tried to hold on to second. Gottschalk saw the checkers first for the win with Hoeft picking up second. Sweeney was third with Storkson and Tom Dorn rounding out the top five.

Brandon DeLacy of Stoughton was awarded the win after the 15 lap Bandit feature event. Seuter Bennett and Paul Reagles led the field to green with Bennett taking the early lead. A four wide battle for second ensued with DeLacy claiming the position and Devon Dixon charging up to third. Dixon drove to the low side and DeLacy went high on Bennett as they all looked to lead. Dixon took the top spot on lap four with DeLacy following into second. Dixon remained in control of the lead with DeLacy close behind over the remainder of laps. But following post-race inspection, Dixon was forced to vacate his finishing position handing the win to DeLacy. Josh Marx was scored second followed by Dave Schmidt, Nick Schmidt and Dennis Wuesthoff.

Next Saturday, May 10, is a full program of racing in all division sponsored by the Radio Doctor of Madison as well as the Best Appearing Car Contest.
