Stenjem Hogs Spotlight on Harley Davidson Night
CAMBRIDGE, WI (Saturday, July 28, 2018) Utica pilot, Riley Stenjem, scored his first career Late Model feature victory on Saturday night at Jefferson Speedway. Stenjem waged a great battle with Dylan Schuyler on his way to winning the MDA 50 lap Late Model feature presented by Harley Davidson of Madison.
Don Gaserude and Seth Reamer paced the field to green with Reamer holding a slight advantage at the completion of lap one. Gaserude fought back to the inside of Reamer, claiming the top spot on lap two and bringing Dylan Schuyler along into second. The sole caution of the race appeared on lap five when Craig Phillips spun in turn one after contact with Max Kahler. Gaserude led the pack back to green with Schuyler in second and Reamer in third. Stephen Scheel slipped by Reamer to gain the third position while Schuyler went to work on Gaserude at the front. On lap nine, Schuyler got inside Gaserude, sliding into command with Scheel trying to follow under Gaserude. Scheel completed the pass for second on lap 11 with Riley Stenjem in tow for third. Stenjem began to apply pressure on Scheel, getting alongside on lap 18. Schuyler increased his advantage over the field while Scheel and Stenjem battled for second. Stenjem eventually made the pass for second on lap 27 and began to cut into Schuyler’s lead. Lap after lap, Stenjem closed in on Schuyler. On lap 34, Stenjem approached the leader as he peeked to the low side of Schuyler. Stenjem drew even with Schuyler as the duo battled door to door for control. With 11 laps to go, Stenjem cleared Schuyler to assume the lead. But Schuyler wasn’t ready to give up quite yet, as he crossed over to the low groove and returned alongside Stenjem. After a brief return bout, Stenjem once again cleared for the lead and drove off to grab the checkers. Schuyler settled for second followed by Scheel, John Ovadal Jr and Dale Nottestad.
Chris Chenoweth of Watertown claimed the 30 lap Sportsman feature event. Kevin Schultz and Bryce Miller brought the field to green as they battled wheel to wheel for control. Schultz finally cleared for the lead on lap five with Jim Taylor up to battle Miller for second. Taylor claimed the spot on lap eight, bringing Chenoweth along for third. Taylor and Chenoweth drew up to the rear of Schultz, searching for an opening. On lap 18, Taylor drove to the high side of the leader, while Chenoweth went low on Schultz. The trio raced three wide into turn three with Chenoweth emerging with the lead on lap 19. Taylor pulled into second while Chenoweth began to pull away. Chenoweth cruised to the checkers with Taylor coming home second. Mark Deporter, Dan Harris and Randy Breunig rounded out the top five.
Edgerton’s Mark English captured the 20 lap International feature. Chad Olds led lap one from the outside of the front row with Noah Pankow up to second. Pankow dove under Olds on lap three, clearing a lap later with English trying to follow past Olds. English made the pass on lap five and set his sights on Pankow at the front. On lap seven, English drove to the high side of Pankow and taking over the point. Josh Marx followed English around the outside of Pankow to pick up second, but English was already on his way to the checkers to get the win. Marx finished second followed by Scott Hoeft, Neil Higgins and Mike Lambert.
Philip Wuesthoff of Beaver Dam was scored as the winner of the 25 lap Hobby Stock main event. After a caution on the opening lap, Christian Janssen took the early lead while Chuck Egli and Jared Vike battled for second behind him. On lap seven, Chester Williams tried to make it a three wide fight for second. At the same time, Vike began to fade slightly, allowing Williams and Egli to emerge side by side for second. But contact between Egli and Brandon Angileri resulted in Egli spinning to force the second yellow of the race. Janssen led the field back to green with Williams in second and Brandon Riedner in third. Riedner dove under Williams on the restart, taking away the second spot and pulling up behind Janssen. Riedner got under Janssen entering turn one on lap 11. Riedner took over the lead a lap later with Wuesthoff following in his tracks for second. Riedner showed the way to the checkers with Wuesthoff crossing the stripe in second. Following post race inspection, Riedner was forced to vacate his finishing position, handing the win over to Wuesthoff. Scott Riedner, Jim Tate Jr, Williams and Janssen completed the top five.
Tim Brockhouse of Shakopee, MN, claimed the 25 lap Legends feature event. James Lynch grabbed the initial lead on lap one with Mike Storkson up to second. Storkson began to fade on lap two, handing second to Dilon Schwanbeck. On lap six, Brockhouse got by Schwanbeck to take over the second spot and slide up next to Lynch. Brockhouse cleared for the lead on lap nine with Schwanbeck in tow for second. Lap 11 saw the first of three quick caution periods, setting up Brockhouse and Schwanbeck on the front row for the restart. Each time, Brockhouse fired into the lead, now with Baiden Haskett up to second. Haskett hounded the rear bumper of Brockhouse, waiting for an opening that would not come. Haskett tapped Brockhouse’s rear bumper on the final lap, but Brockhouse remained in control to the checkers to secure the win. Haskett finished second followed by Aaron Moyer, Ryan Braseth and Matt Rohde.
Fort Atkinson’s Chris Gottschalk got the 15 lap Road Warrior feature win. Jasper Gronert led lap one with Mark Dewey moving into second. Dewey got by Gronert on lap three, followed by Bill Reynolds into second. Gottschalk joined the leaders on lap five, taking second from Reynolds a lap later. Gottschalk stole the point from Dewey on lap 11, cruising to the checkers from there to get the win. Bill Sweeney got by Dewey to take second with Reynolds and Bryan Gottschalk completing the top five.
The Upper Midwest Vintage Racing Association joined the program with Pat Echlin of Dyer, IN, scoring the win in the 15 lap feature event. Bob Heine led early from the front row with Echlin quickly up to second. Echlin took the high side of Heine, drawing even on lap six. Echlin powered into the lead on lap seven with Pat Heaney following into second. Echlin spent the remainder of the race holding Heaney at bay to cross the stripe first for the win. Heaney was second followed by Ken Hutchens, Dick Kath and Heine rounding out the top five.
Next Saturday, August 4, is round three of the Tournament of Destruction. Men, metal and mayhem get underway at 7pm. Jefferson Speedway is located halfway between Jefferson and Cambridge on Hwy 18. Please visit jeffersonspeedway.com for more information.
